To be considered for admission, applicants must complete or have in progress a minimum of 24 semester hours (SH) at the University of Iowa, including the following pre-requisites:

1) Academic (Application may be made while academic pre-requisites are in progress)

  • Human Anatomy 27:53 or 60:110
  • Elementary Psychology 31:1
  • Introduction to Sociology 34:1, OR Social-Psychology 34:20, 31:15
  • Perspectives on Leisure and Play 169:070
  • Human Development and Behavior 96:30

2) Experience—On a separate sheet, describe volunteer or paid experience you have had with children.

3) References--Have two letters of recommendation sent to the CL committee at the address listed below.

Students must have at least a 2.50 grade point average (GPA) for University of Iowa course work and a 2.50 cumulative GPA. A 2.50 GPA does NOT guarantee admission to the program.

 

Transfer students must complete or have in progress a minimum of 12 SH at the University of Iowa, including—the pre-requisites listed above or equivalent courses or higher level courses addressing the same content areas. Transfer students must have at least a 2.50 GPA for University of Iowa course work and a 2.50 cumulative GPA.

 

Please submit official transcripts and a copy of your current UI registration with this application. Because of the sequential nature of courses, students with 24 to 62 SH may be given preferential consideration in the admission process.

 

Students who believe they qualify for an exceptional admission should submit a written appeal (no more than one single-spaced typed page) and any other relevant supporting documentation or evidence for making a valid judgment on admission to the program.

 

Submit to: CL Committee, Leisure Studies, 408 JB, the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242. Admission decisions will be made once per year, approximately two weeks prior to the start of the pre-registration period for fall semesters. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION IS MARCH 15. The department will email students their admission status.
