Work experience related to student's academic interests.
033:005 Rhetoric of Scientific Inquiry
The course is intended to provide undergraduate students with a guided introduction to research methods and manuscript styles in the natural sciences and to enhance communication skills required for study in the sciences.
033:029 First year Seminar s.h. Arranged
Small discussion class taught by faculty member; topics chosen by instructor; may include outside activities (e.g., films, lectures, performances, readings, visits to research facilities). Open to first- and second-semester students.
033:040 The Good Society 3 s.h.
This course focuses on the open-ended question, "What is the good society?"  A broad range of perspectives - historical, economic, political, institutional, religious, philosophical, scientific, and architectural - will provide the basis for analysis, discussion, and writing towards a definition of the good society.  Since it is essential to the quality of class discussion that students be present, prepared, and focused, there are frequent, spontaneous, and graded in-class writing checks on assigned materials.  In addition, students are required to write several essays in response to specific questions during the course of the semester. 033:050 Making Choices: Interdisciplinary Perspectives 3 s.h.
Philosophical and historical foundations of choice; personal, social, private decision making. GE: humanities.
033:055 Revolutions in 19th-Century France
Introduction to social and political history of 19th-century France, an unstable but rich period in French history and culture. GE: humanities.
033:056 The Splendor of Cities
This course takes undergraduate students on an exploration of cities through time and across continents to discover their splendor, appreciate their complexity, and recognize the efforts needed to make cities work.
033:060 Scientific Reasoning 3 s.h.
Patterns of reasoning useful for understanding and evaluating scientific evidence, theory, controversy; historical and contemporary examples from the physical, biological, behavioral, biomedical sciences. GE: quantitative or formal reasoning.
033:065 Essays & Assays

Clones, molecular mimicry, AIDS, cancer, autoimmune diseases, antigen presentation, and other such topics from biology and medicine are considered in tandem with aesthetic concepts of mimesis, identity, and representations from philosophy and cultural theory in order to examine the notion of the unique Self in a matrix of Others.

The nature of personal and cultural identity within a pluralistic society; race; ethnicity, national identity, class, sexuality, and gender as categories of cultural difference. GE: cultural diversity.
003:095 Science and the Arts: Chaos Theory 3 s.h.
Explorations of how chaos theory (and related theories including complexity theory, catastrophe theory, and fractal geometry) can illuminate aspects of the arts and the creative process.
033:111 Myth and Reason 3 s.h.
Theories of reason and rationality presumed to govern knowledge-producing disciplines, and their relation to myths as stories and explanations.
033:115 What is Storytelling for? 3 s.h.
Philosophical and experiential examination of storytelling that evaluates the role of storytelling in performative acts of interpretation. Same as 01J:115.
033:120 Tobacco, Health & Society 3 s.h.
The history of tobacco and its cultural associations, production, promotion, health issues and control efforts around the world, with particular emphasis on countries with unique problems or approaches, such as the U.S., Eastern Europe and China.
033:125 A Dialogue Between Law and Philosophy 3 s.h.
Legal and philosophical approaches to such controversial issues as abortion, affirmative action, euthanasia, hate speech, and pornography. Same as 026:125, 091:629
033:130 Paris and the Art of Urban Life
Pictorial treatment of well-known architectural sites, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Cathedral of Notre Dame; intersection of urban history, art, architecture, daily life.
033:139 Religion and Environmental Ethics
How humans conceptualize the biophysical environment through religious beliefs and practices; how images of the environment influence people's activities and are used in grass-roots environmental movements.
033:142 Natural Sciences and Human Cultures 3 s.h.
Nature and value of modern science and technology in historical, cultural, and philosophical, perspectives; case studies of scientific discovery, technological innovation and development, science policy, negotiation of cultural values, conceptions of nature and society. GE: humanities

Impact of gender on diagnosis, treatment, allocation, and utilization of resources in medicine; study design, data collection, interpretation and implementation of results in research.

Theories of what it is to act and to know, of what intelligence might be in animals, humans, machines; perspectives from philosophy, psychology.
033:145 Literature, Music, and Aesthetics 3 s.h.
Interdisciplinary connections between literature and music; specific cultural, ideological contexts. Same as 025:137, 041:162.
033:146 Literature and the Visual Arts
The roles of meaning, values, and cultural expression in selected works of literature and the visual arts from the Enlightenment to Modernism; interrelationship of poetry, essays, novellas, and short stories with paintings, prints, sculpture, and architecture.
033:147 Nature vs. Nurture: Theory to Practice
Explores sex differences in cognitive abilities using a psychosocial vs. biological perspective while assessing impact on various populations especially women in science, math, engineering, and technology.
033:151 Individuals and Institutions 3 s.h.
Relationships between individuals and institutions viewed through outstanding works of literature, social science, and law.
033:152 Values in the Contemporary World 3 s.h.
Modern problems in definition and choice of values; writings of contemporary ethical theorists, novelists.
033:153 Hard Cases: Science Policy and Values 3 s.h.
Major issues in practical ethics through difficult case studies in fields such as law, medicine, business, politics; readings in classical authors; recent contributions from several disciplines.
033:154 Human Nature and the Impact of Science 3 s.h.
Relationship among scientific, humanistic, social, religious thought. GE: humanities.
033:155 Risk Technology and the Public 3 s.h.
Place and criticism of risks in society; quantitative risk assessments and the comprehension of risks by the public, roles of experts, public interests; readings from literature, philosophy, social science; case studies.
033:161 The Arts in Performance 3 s.h.
Interplay between art forms and other cultural patterns, institutions, rituals; close examination of creative and theoretical writings, specific works of music, graphic art; discussions with artists and directors of on-campus performances. GE: fine arts or humanities.

How law and ethics apply to individuals and institutions concerned with the visual arts. Same as 01H:182, 024:161
