UI professional photographers capture defining events of our times

Associate Professor John Kimmich-Javier attends the “Running of the Bulls” every year in Pamplona, Spain. This event is correctly known as “The Fiesta de San Fernin,” and is held between July 6 to July 14, in honor of Pamplona’s Patron Saint, San Fernin.

The tradition dates back to 1987 when Kimmich-Javier first attended the event to do a story for the Chicago Tribune Travel Section. Since then, he has returned every year to work on assignments for his agency, Bildhuset, located in Sweden, and for his own creative photographic work. He was invited to exhibit his work in 2001 in Pamplona, at the Sala Garcia Castañon, one of the city’s oldest and most prestigious art galleries.

Kimmich-Javier placed second in the Pictures of the Year International Photography competition, in the Sports Action category with this photo titled “Moment of Truth.”

Beginning in the fall of 2003, Graduate Teaching Assistant Michael Brunette spent time documenting the elections and campaign stops the candidates
made in Iowa.

Left: UI journalism graduate Matt Holst (left) and Democratic candidate Wesley Clark (center) exit the Hamburg Inn. Clark was attempting to make his way to the Iowa Memorial Union to give a speech. Among the throng of reporters and photographers, Clark said, “I came here to shake hands with people and I can’t get past the media.”
