 Student Groups

BY RACHEL ERB

The University of Iowa’s chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) found themselves in a restructuring phase with eager young members ready for action.

“We are a fairly new group of members who are mostly journalism pre-majors, “ NABJ advisor Vanessa Shelton said.

The group is lead by President Cameron Coker (junior, Davenport, Iowa) and has formed groups to work on “The Word”, an NABJ-run public affairs television show, and NURU, the NABJ campus newsletter.

Shelton is also interested in rallying the group together to attend this summer’s UNITY conference in Chicago for journalists of color. The conference is a coming together of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian American Journalists Association, the Native American Journalists Association and NABJ.

New members are welcome and encouraged to attend. For information on the conference contact UNITY Journalists of Color at unity08 (at) unityjournalists.org or (703)854-3585.
