Fourth Estate Banquet
54 students honored at annual ceremony
Students received a total of over $140,000 in scholarships at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Fourth Estate Banquet on April 16.
The event kicked off with a social hour, allowing honorees and guests to mingle at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville where the banquet was held. Following a dinner, the ceremony opened with remarks from J-MC School Director David Perlmutter before moving on to the student awards.
According to Professor Emeritus Kenneth Starck, the Fourth Estate Banquet originated in the 1920s, and was called The Pica Ball. The event eventually came to be known as the Wayzgoose Banquet, before evolving into the Fourth Estate Banquet.
