Tuition & Fees

Tuition and fees for graduate students vary from year to year.  All graduate students holding 25% or greater graduate appointments receive partial tuition scholarships.

Academic Year Stipends for Graduate Teaching and Research Assistants

The Department offers a limited number of half-time assistantships requiring 20 hours of teaching and/or research service per week for the fall and spring semesters.  Assistantships are competitive and are awarded on the following criteria: (1) scholarship, (2) experience, and (3) specific ability desired for tasks for which assistantships are allocated.  Preference is given to Ph.D. candidates.  In accordance with general University policy, assistantship recipients (quarter-time or more) are classified as Iowa residents for tuitition purposes.

Summer Assistance

A limited number of assistantships for summer support are available from several sources (departmental, research grants, etc.).  These assistantships are also competitive.  The department attempts to provide all current Ph.D. students some summer support.  Summer stipends vary from approximately $1000 to $5000 depending on qualifications and duties.

Louis E. Alley Scholarship

One Louis E. Alley Tuition Scholarship is awarded annually.  Dr. Alley was a faculty member from 1954-1982 and served as department chairman from 1960-1978. The scholarship was established by the Alley family in memory of Professor Alley. The recipient of this award is determined by the faculty. The amount of this scholarship ranges from $500 to 1500 annually.

Carl V. Gisolfi Scholarship

The Department of Exercise Science has developed a scholarship fund for Ph.D. candidates in memory of Carl V. Gisolfi. Dr. Gisolfi, an internationally recognized exercise physiologist, was a faculty member in the department from 1972 to 2000. The amount varies each year depending on the number of awards. Partial to full tuition scholarships for Ph.D. students are awarded from this fund.  The faculty determine the recipients of this scholarship each semester.

Charles H. McCloy Scholarship

C.H. McCloy Scholarships are awarded each spring to graduate students in the department. Up to six awards are made annually.  The amount varies each year depending on the number of awards to be given and the funding available.  These awards range from $300 to $1,600. The faculty determine the recipients of this scholarship on an annual basis.

Rai Tai and Ray Fong Chang Honorary Scholarship

Ray Tai Chang, Ph.D. (Exercise Physiology - 1996) established a new scholarship fund for Ph.D. candidates in Exercise Science. Dr. Chang is currently a professor in Physical Education at the National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan. He created this scholarship in appreciation of the opportunities extended to him at The University of Iowa and to honor his brother, Ray Fong Chang, who made it possible for him to attend graduate school in the United States. This scholarship ranges from $350 to $500 and is awarded annually to a Ph.D. candidate.
