At The University of Iowa, integrative physiology is a natural science major in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). The natural science majors include the departments of Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Integrative Physiology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Psychology and Statistics.
There are two distinctly different majors offered through the department; Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training. The Integrative Physiology major is designed for students who wish to pursue rigorous study of human physiological systems integrated across the molecular/cellular, systems, and organism levels. These students typically continue their studies in health professional programs such as medicine, osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, dentistry, optometry and podiatry, or pursue Ph.D. or M.S. degrees in the physiological or biomedical sciences. Our department has one of the highest acceptance rates for students who apply to health professional programs. Entrance requirements for admission to health professional programs are included in the curriculum for the major. These requirements include course work in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, mathematics, microbiology, physics and psychology in addition to the broad range of departmental courses.
The second departmental major, Athletic Training, is a clinically oriented major. Athletic training is an allied health profession with specific basic science and clinical requirements. Students in this major are well prepared to take the National Board Examination required for certification as an athletic trainer. After graduation and receiving their certification, individuals typically accept athletic training positions in high schools or private clinics. Alternatively, these students continue their education and earn an advanced degree (M.S.) in order to obtain athletic training positions at higher levels (i.e., college or university levels).
Both majors require formal applications to enter the major. Integrative physiology majors may apply during the spring semester of their first (i.e., freshman) year for admission starting in the second year. Applicants should have completed (or be currently enrolled in) the prerequisite requirements in rhetoric, biology, chemistry and mathematics. Athletic training majors apply during the spring semester of their first year for admission to the program starting in the second year.

Announcing the expansion of the undergraduate major in Integrative Physiology
Undergraduate students who wish to pursue rigorous study of human physiological systems with career interests in the health professions or biomedical research are encouraged to consider the Integrative Physiology major in the Department of Integrative Physiology. The Department is increasing the number of students in the major. Commencing with the fall semester 2008 students who will have completed the prerequisite requirements for the major by the end of their first year are encouraged to apply for admission to the major after the first semester of the freshman year for entrance at the start of the sophomore year. Well-qualified juniors and seniors will continue to be accepted. Applications for entry into the major for the fall semester 2009 will be reviewed in March 2009.
