Admissions Checklist

Since the graduate applicant must be accepted by this program and the University of Iowa Graduate College, application materials should be sent to two separate offices.

The following materials should be submitted to the Writers' Workshop:

  1. A manuscript of the applicant's best work, with manuscript cover sheet
  2. A personal statement
  3. An official copy of transcripts from universities and colleges that document all undergraduate and graduate work
  4. A copy of the Application to the Graduate College (unless submitting Graduate College Application online)
  5. The Application for Graduate Awards
  6. The Supplement to the Financial Aid Application
  7. Letters of Recommendation
  8. General GRE's (optional, but recommended)
  9. A self-addressed stamped postcard (optional)

The following materials should be submitted to the University of Iowa Graduate Admissions Office:

  1. Application to the Graduate College
  2. $60 application fee ($100 for international students)
  3. A second set of your official academic records/transcripts (current and former UI students do not need to provide UI transcripts)
  4. General GRE's (optional, but recommended)
  5. International students may also be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to comply with the university's English Language Proficiency Requirements.
  6. Once recommended for admission, international students must send a Financial Statement.

Application Deadline
The postmark deadline for submitting an application is January 3.Applicants are only accepted for entry into the Fall semester. Please send manuscripts between November 1 and January 3.

Decisions on admissions and financial aid awards are made in March or early April for the following academic year.
