Courses for Undergraduates and Students not in the Workshop Program
The Undergraduate Poetry Workshop (8C:166) and the Undergraduate Fiction Workshop
(8C:163) are courses for undergraduates. Admission is competitive, based on
acceptance of manuscripts submitted for approval. These courses are taught
by staff members and are conducted in much the same way as the Graduate Poetry
and Fiction Workshops. Students must submit a manuscript of one short story
or 6 to 8 poems to the Workshop office, in the Dey
House, during the last day
of regular registration-- the Friday before classes start-- between 8:30 AM
and 4:00 PM.
Other students may enroll in Creative Writing (8C:023), Fiction Writing (8C:097),
or Poetry Writing (8C:098), which are 3-semester-hour courses for graduates
or undergraduates who have had less experience in writing. The instruction
in these courses provides students with an opportunity to develop skill in
the basic techniques of writing fiction or poetry.
There is no undergraduate major in creative writing, but it is possible for
an English major to have a concentration in creative writing. Interested undergraduates
should direct their inquiries to Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department
of English.
The Workshop also runs a summer program for undergraduate and graduate students who are not members of the Workshop.
