October 17, 2013

Workshop alumna Mary Szybist has been named a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award for Poetry for her second book of poems, Incarnadine. National Book Award winners will be announced during the National Book Awards Ceremony on November 20th in New York City.

The National Book Award is one of the nation’s most prestigious literary prizes and has a stellar record of identifying and rewarding quality writing.

A number of Workshop graduates, in addition to Mary Szybist, have also been honored this fall by the National Book Foundation. Merritt Tierce (MFA 2011) was named a 2013 "5 Under 35" Honoree, for her novel, Love Me Back, which will be published next fall by Doubleday. Two Workshop alumni were named to the National Book Awards longlists: Anthony Marra's (MFA 2011) first book, the novel, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, was named to the longlist for the Fiction award; Brenda Hillman's ninth book of poems, Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire, was longlisted for the Poetry award.
