General Information
The nineteenth annual conference of the Central Association of Teachers of Japanese will take place in Phillips Hall at the University of Iowa on March 3-4, 2007. The theme of this year's conference (CATJ-19) is “Integration: Cultivating Interdisciplinary Multi-level Perspectives on Japanese Language Instruction.” It focuses on a broader view in which language instruction is a part of education on Japan.
In addition to concurrent paper and poster sessions, two keynote speeches, invited colloquia with a roundtable discussion session, and a technology fair are scheduled. The first keynote speaker is Professor Seiichi Makino at Princeton University, and the title of his keynote speech is " Japanese Language & Culture Education and Anime: The Rationale and Methodology". The second speaker, Professor Andrew Cohen at the University of Minnesota, is a distinguished professor of ESL. He has studied twelve languages including Japanese. Based on his extensive experience in living in foreign countries and research on language learning and teaching, he will give a speech entitled "Strategy Instruction for Learners of Japanese: How Do You Do It and What's in it for the Learners?". The colloquium, AP Japanese and Articulation, focuses on the articulation between secondary and post-secondary education, and will feature Professor Motoko Tabuse at Eastern Michigan University and Mr. Michael Kluemper at NCJLT/Jasper High School, IN. They are AP consultants, and Mr. Kluemper currently offers an AP course. The technology workshop will be conducted by Professor Kazumi Hatasa at Purdue University and Professor Sayuri Kubota at Eastern Michigan University. They will introduce participants to get hand-on exposure to innovative on-line materials.
During the conference JP Trading will offer a book sale for Japanese language and linguistics books.
