Dating and Friendship - American Style! (Life in Iowa Series)

What does "friendship" really mean to an American? What does it mean to be "dating" or "in a relationship?" Can women really ask men out? If someone says they "will call you," WILL THEY? What are some honest answers about same-sex relationships in the U.S.? Do Americans run around having sex all the time just like on TV and in the movies? Do you have to change your own values and beliefs when it comes to relationships here? Come and participate in a workshop on how Americans perceive and experience various types of relationships. Discuss your own and American expectations in relationships. The session will feature panelists who will share their experiences – and you can share yours – about relationships in the United States. Wednesday, September 27th, 3:30 – 5PM, The Commons, University Capitol Centre (home to OISS).

OISS Life in Iowa events

International Student Day is Wednesday, September 13.
On Wednesday September 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm the Friends of International Students (FIS) will hold a reception in honor of a proclamation declaring the day International Student Day in Iowa City and the 35th anniversary of the FIS organization. The reception will be in the University Capitol Centre Commons in the Old Capitol Town Center. Current and past Friends of International Students and all international students are invited to attend. Snacks and soft drinks will be served.
Caryl Lyons, FIS president, said the proclamation and reception are a way to thank international students as well as the local community members who have worked with FIS over the past 35 years. ‘The community owes a lot to international students for the diversity they bring to the area,’ Lyons said. ‘They bring all kinds of intercultural activities to Iowa City so that we are a microcosm of world instead of a little town in Iowa.’

What does it mean if an American says, “We should hang out sometime”? What is considered “a date”? If someone says they will call me, will they really? Can my professor be my friend? Come and participate in a workshop on how Americans perceive and experience various types of relationships. Discuss your own and American expectations in relationships with classmates, professors, friends, and romantic relationships. The session will feature panelists who will share their experiences – and you can share yours – about relationships in the United States. Tuesday, September 27th, 3:30 – 5PM, The Commons, University Capitol Centre (home to OISS).

Finding the OISS Office -

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) moved from the old International Center to a new location just this past spring. OISS is now located in what is officially called the University Capitol Centre (UCC), in the Old Capitol Mall. Enter the Mall from the bus stops, look right, and you will see a large sign that reads ‘University of Iowa’. Once you enter the doorway under this sign, walk straight and go through one more glass doorway. When you see a glass door on your left with a sign board for International Programs and the OISS you have arrived! Please enter this doorway and ask for help at the information desk.
