Tom Walsh (B.A. 1972) The Foundation for Biomedical Research Announces Winners of the 7th Annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards; The award recognizes outstanding journalism demonstrating the essential role of humane animal research in medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs. The 2008 winners are as follows: Gautam Naik of The Wall Street Journal, Marie McCullough of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Academy Awards nominated directors Steven Ascher and Jeanne Jordan, Richard Ingham and Pia Ohlin of Agence France-Presse (AFP), Howard Bell of Minnesota Medicine Magazine, Tom Walsh of The Ellsworth American, and Terri Peterson Smith of Science and Technology Magazine.

Haven Simmons (Ph.D. 1992)is an associate professor of communication arts teaching journalism and public relations at Salisbury University in Maryland. He also mentors public information officers, teaches media relations and anchors newscasts for emergency response courses at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and works as an observer/controller in emergency response courses for the National Response and Rescue Training Center at Texas A&M University. Daisy Hutzell-Rodman (B.A. 1998) Hutzell-Rodman was Chair of the Omaha Press Club's Journalism Awards Banquet May 29. This event was a dual awards banquet for the Excellence in Journalism Contest awards and the inaugural Journalists of Excellence Hall of Fame awards. The first living honorees were Omaha Sun Newspapers owner Warren Buffett, publisher Stanford Lipsey, and editor Paul N. Williams, for their 1973 Pulitzer-prize winning coverage of Boys Town finances. Karen S. Good Goedken (B.A. 1970) B.A. Mass Communications and Political Science, 1970; Bachlor of Science in Nursing, 1976; LTC Good Goedken, USAR, ret., merged her writing and health care background as a policy analyst through calendar year 2007 serving the Army Wounded Warrior Program in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Army Surgeon General's Traumatic Brain Injury Task Force and co-authored the long term care portion of that report. The staff officer assignment included meetings at Walter Reed, the Pentagon and travel throughout the United States and Germany. She was also part of the initial designs for a new pathway of care for Soldiers from Theater to the Soldier's home community. In her civilian life, Ms. Goedken is a public health nurse for Hennepin County, Minneapolis, Mn. (5-21-2008)
W. James "Jim" Annexstad (B.A. 2995) Major Jim Annexstad, an Instructor, International and Operations Law Division, The Judge Advocate General's School was recently named The Outstanding Young Military Lawyer by the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. The annual award for legal contributions is based on professional accomplishments, leadership and service to the community. His latest article, "The detention and prosecution of insurgents and other non-traditional combatants - a look at the Task Force 134 process and the future of detainee prosecutions" was recently nominated for the 2008 Leiber Society Military Prize, a prize given by the the American Society of International Law based upon an exceptional writing in English by a member of the regular or reserve armed forces of any nation that significantly enhances the understanding and implementation of the law of war.

Major Annexstad is a native of Des Moines, Iowa. He received his BA in Journalism in 1995 from the University of Iowa and his JD in 1999 from William Mitchell College of Law. (4-25-2008)

John Bohnenkamp (B.A. 1988) Sports editor, The Hawk Eye (Burlington, Iowa) received two honorable mention awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors national writing contest. Was honored in the column writing and explanatory categories in the under-40,000 circulation division. (4-3-2008)

William Brinkman (B.A. 1990) successfully relaunched the satirical web site, The Bolingbrook Babbler. Located at www.bolingbrookbabbler.com, it features the stories of a fictional Weekly World News style tabloid as it covers "The Truth" about the Western Suburbs of Chicago. In The Babbler, Brinkman satirizes believers in the supernatural, the media, and current events. It has been featured in The Bad Astronomy Blog and The Friendly Atheist Blog.

Stories include a creationist math conference, scientists accidently creating a new universe, vampires enjoying a human role-playing game, and the illegal space alien problem. New stories are printed every Sunday. (3-16-2008)

Curtiss (Curt) Hills (B.A. 1989) has published Hannah's Legalized Kidnapping (Outskirts Press). It's a non-fiction book about two Florida parents who were arrested and had their 18-year-old mentally and physically disabled daughter taken from them after authorities conducting a rushed two-hour investigation. The quick investigation contained many false assumptions and errors, and failed to take the simplest of investigative effort which would have revealed the accusations were false. Instead, the couple was forced to trudge through the legal system to prove their innocence and get their daughter back.
Hills is an assistant managing editor and writer with The Villages Daily Sun, the country's fastest growing daily newspaper for three consecutive years. He's won more than a dozen awards, mostly for public service and stories that expose harm or neglect to the community he serves.
Georgia NeSmith (Ph.D. 1994) Received a grant from the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, in partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts, to prepare images for an exhibition at Image City Photography Gallery in Rochester, July 18-August 16, 2007. (7-9-2007)
Susan Wisbey-Smith (B.A. 1988) For the past year, I've been working as a Managing Editor at GLC in Northbrook, Ill. I publish several custom publications for healthcare clients including OSU Medical Center, Inova Health System, University of Michigan Health System and the UConn Health Center. The work is a great combination of writing, editing and managing client relationships. My goal now is to add the University of Iowa to my client roster. (4-30-2007)

Award came in the explanatory category (under-40,000 circulation division) for a story on the Missouri Valley Conference's rise to prominence in college basketball. It was my 10th APSE honor. Evan Peterson (B.A. 2002) Was appointed to Media Affairs Specialist in the Office of Public Affairs for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington. The Office of Public Affairs is responsible for press coordination and strategy for the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, and the Department's many divisions, including criminal, civil, antitrust, national security, environmental, and tax. Abby Oliver (B.A. 2004) In 2006 I left SONY BMG Music Entertainment in Nashville and returned to Shock Ink in Los Angeles. At Shock Ink I am one of three music publicists working with clients such as Willie Nelson, Toby Keith and David Lee Roth of Van Halen. Recently, I successfully pitched stories that ran in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and the Washington Post, as well as ABC World News, PARADE, In Style and Entertainment Weekly. Roy Alden Atwood (Ph.D. 1984) I have been serving as the president of a limited-enrollment, church-affiliated college in Idaho since 2004. I served as Dean of the College from 2000 to 2004, after almost 20 years at the University of Idaho and Director of the School of Communication. New Saint Andrews College was named one of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's 2006 "All-American Colleges: Top Schools for Conservatives, Old-Fashioned Liberals and People of Faith."   After a Fulbright to South Africa in 1998 and a return to Africa during the winter break of 2002-2003, I published three articles with two of my South African colleagues: "Interactivity on the Web: A Theoretical Analysis," with Dr. A. Naudé and Dr Johannes Froneman, in Communicare, 23:1 (2004, South Africa). "Two-way symmetrical communication and interactivity on the Web: A case study of two South African non-governmental organisations" (with Dr. Annelie Naudé and Dr. Johannes Froneman) in Acta Academica (April 2003, South Africa). Erika Yepsen (B.A. 2003) Recently escorted media from Tacoma, WA on a trip to Antarctica to cover the U.S. Air Force's participation in Operation Deep Freeze. Operation Deep Freeze is the name for the Air Force mission transporting supplies and personnel to Antarctica to support the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Program. (12-31-2006)
Brittnee E. Henry (2001) has accepted the position of Assistant Director of Development at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. US News and World Report ranks M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as the #2 center in the nation for the diagnosis, treatment, and research of cancer. Previously, Henry was the Executive Director of Speedway Children's Charities, the official charity of Texas Motor Speedway, in Fort Worth, TX. Henry also holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of Iowa. (11-12-2006)
Kate Hamilton (B.A. 2004) I recently have been promoted from editorial assistant to assistant editor for Skin Inc. magazine--a trade publication serving the spa and skin care industry. In addition, at the start of this year, I began writing a monthly spa cuisine column, which was born from a feature article I wrote last year highlighting three innovative spas in the industry. Shawna McDonald (B.A. 2004) recently made a move from The McGraw-Hill Companies, to Theatre Council Productions, a Chicago-based Broadway promoter and producer. At the Theatre Council, McDonald writes, edits and designs materials used to promote touring Broadway shows in markets across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Kristine Heykants (M.A. 1994) is a recipient of an MCP/McKnight Photography Fellowship, administered by the Minnesota Center for Photography for the McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships for Photographers Program.

Four $25,000 fellowships are awarded each year, and are selected on the basis of perceived and promised excellence in photographic work, are given to mid-career Minnesota-resident artists who utilize photography as a primary tool in their art with the intent of supporting their creative output over the course of a year.

Besides the financial award, the four fellows will be shown in a group exhibition at the Minnesota Center for Photography in late summer 2007 and will participate in public talks about their work in conjunction with the exhibition. (7-16-06)
Brian Siguenza (B.A. 2004) returns to his hometown of Cedar Rapids July 24 to produce the 6 and 10 p.m. news for KGAN-TV (CBS). Brian has helmed broadcasts from morning to night for KCAU-TV (ABC) in Sioux City since July 2004. (6-28-06)
(Donald James) Jamie DeMoney (B.A. 1994) For the second consecutive season, I am compiling and authoring the Power 50 preseason football and boys basketball team rankings for Sporting News/School Sports annual high school publications. Since 1999, I have compiled the National Prep Poll, the nation's second-oldest (since 1987) national high school football and boys basketball rankings. The National Prep Poll is published by World Features Syndicate, Inc., and are the only national high school rankings distributed by the Associated Press. I am also a regular contributor to American Football Monthly, a coaching trade magazine for which I was managing editor from 1999-2000. These are my "freelance" jobs. Since 2002, my full-time employment is as an analyst and video coordinator for Forbes Recruit Evaluation, a football recruiting service with more than 300 college programs as annual paid subscribers. Elizabeth Noteware (B.A. 1930s) Betty was a University of Iowa journalism graduate over 60 years ago, and has served Manistee County, Michigan in many capacities. Abbie (Fedler) Sanderson (B.A. 2004) has been hired as a First News Producer for KMBC in Kansas City, MO. She is one of two producers on the 2-hour morning newscast. Sanderson previously worked at KCRG-TV 9 in Cedar Rapids, IA as a morning producer for just more than 2 years. This is Abbie's second job out of college. (4-16-06)

Leah B. Garris (B.A. 2002) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) Leah B. Garris, senior associate editor of Buildings, a Stamats Business Media publication, received the coveted Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award, at a luncheon held March 23 at New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Stamats Business Media is a subsidiary of Stamats Communications, Inc. of Cedar Rapids.

Often referred to as the Pulitzer Prize for business journalism, the Neal Award is the business publishing industry s salute to outstanding editorial excellence. Winning entries are selected for contribution to the field the publication serves, as well as for journalistic enterprise and editorial craftsmanship.

Buildings and Garris were recognized in the category Best How-to Article for Disaster Preparation: Make-or-Break Steps, published in the February 2005 issue. The article was written by Leah B. Garris, and designed by Art Director Elisa Geneser and Senior Designer Scott Easton.

Garris is a 2002 graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and psychology. (3-29-06)
James Arnold (B.S. 1991) (Lenexa, KS) James Arnold, electronic media editor at Vance Publishing Corp.'s food360º division, was honored with a Neal Award the 52nd Annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards for editorial achievement luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. He is being recognized for his work on porkmag.com, one of Vance Publishing Corp.'s food360º division properties.

Porkmag.com is the web arm of Pork magazine, a publication started in 1981 to provide business-focused information for the U.S. pork production industry. During that 25-year period, Pork editors have received ten Neal Awards and have been finalists an additional five times in the annual competition presented by American Business Media. Mr. Arnold, who holds a B.S. degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Iowa, previously worked for the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

The judging panel, chaired by Marshall Loeb, columnist, MarketWatch from Dow Jones, selected 32 Neal Award winners out of 101 finalists from an original 1,250 entries. The Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards have been called the Pulitzer Prize of the business press. (3-24-06)

Doug Hoenig (B.A. 2000) news: I was just recently promoted to Midwest Online Account Executive for the newly formed Comcast Networks division of Comcast. This new division houses all of Comcast's cable properties (E! Style, G4, OLN, Golf, AZN, PBS Kids Sprout). I personally work for each of the networks and their online web property. Danielle Benaroche (B.A. 1998) I was just hired to be the marketing coordinator for the international division of the Boston PBS affiliate, WGBH, which will be an excellent opportunity to put my journalism and French B.A.s to significant use.
     The director of the department is from Clinton, Iowa. During the final interviewing stage, he called to ask me "one more question" prior to making a decision. Naturally, I was eager to answer whatever he might ask.
     "Do you know the words to the Iowa fight song? Can you sing it?"
     There I stood, phone in hand, singing the song, with a few hums here and there, and when I finished, he said, "Great. We'd love you to come work for us."
     I accepted.

Buck Austin (B.A. 1996) I have accepted a full-time position as Arts Editor for ALARM, a quarterly magazine focusing on emerging talents in art, music, fashion and film. I had previously held the same position in a part-time capacity. I will be telecommuting from my home in San Francisco to the ALARM home office in Chicago. In the past two years with ALARM, I've written about topics as diverse as hobo art, Arabic graffiti calligraphy, Maori kites and Southern Gothic graphite drawings. Elizabeth Harness (B.A. 1997) Medical and Health Reporter, WROC-TV/WUHF-TV. Took first place in the Associated Press' "Best News Series" category for a story called "Child Proof-less", which examined how easily children can gain access into the most common bottles found in medicine cabinets; teaching parents how to properly read labels before purchasing OTC medications, where to find truly "safe" caps and poison control information.

Awarded "Best Public Affairs" program by the New York State Broadcasters Association for series called "The Pressure to be Perfect". The series examined the rising number of local young people seeking plastic surgery, the pitfalls of early breast augmentation as well as the psychological and sociological impacts of cosmetic surgery. Victoria Bemker (B.A. 1999) I am finishing my Master's degree at Iowa this semester, but I have a double bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa including one in Journalism. I am a client strategist for one of the leading consulting firms in television in the world, Crawford Johnson and Northcott and before this I worked for 5 and half years for Frank Magid Associate. In my current job, I work with television stations around the US and organizations around the world. . . I help train them on the best practices of journalism in news and marketing. Glenn Townes (B.A. 1986) has been a business writer for Black Enterprise magazine in New York for the past 5 years. In addition, Glenn joined the the staff at Middlesex County College in Edison, New Jersey as an associate instructor in journalism and creative writing. Also, he sold the rights to an essay he wrote several years ago entitled, Tale of a Wounded Warrior to a New York publisher. The essay is currently featured in a bestselling anthology entitled, The African-American Guide to Writing and Publishing Non-Fiction--the book was published in January 2003 by Random House Publishers in New York. Abbie (Fedeler) Sanderson (B.A. 2004) I produce the two-hour morning show at KCRG, the ABC affiliate in Cedar Rapids, IA. I was hired at my current position after just weeks in an internship at the station. I have been doing this for 1 1/2 years now. I am glad landed a job in Cedar Rapids, as I was born and raised in northeast Iowa. (8-30-05)
Nicole Kilmer (B.A. 2003) has been hired as the main anchor at WTVO Channel 17 News in Rockford, Illinois. Previously she worked at KIMT-Television in Mason City, Iowa as their morning and noon anchor. She will anchor and co-produce the 5, 6 and 10 o'clock newscasts Monday through Friday. Nicole is from the Rockford area and is extremely excited to be back in her home town. (8-24-05)

Curtiss Hills (B.A. 1989) was recently promoted to Assistant Managing Editor of The Villages Daily Sun in Central Florida. In June, Hills received a first-place award from the Mid-Florida Society of Professional Journalists and a second-place honor from the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors for his "Tracking Trauma in Marion" series, which brought to light a county's refusal to utilize regional trauma centers despite hundreds of trauma cases in 2004. Since arriving in Florida in 1998, Hills has now received eight individual journalism awards, including the FSNE's inaugural Gold Medal Award in 1999 for Outstanding Public Service. He's previously worked for the Iowa City Press-Citizen and KHAK radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (6-11-05)

Mansi Bhatia (M.A. 2004) I was working as a corporate communications coordinator with a non-profit organization since July 2004 but the writer's itch wouldn't go away. Finally 10 months later, I can start scratching again! I'm joining the Office of Comunications and Public Affairs, San Jose State University as a writer/communications specialist starting June. I had thoroughly enjoyed my stint as the editorial assistant for the External Relations office at UI's International Programs (2002-2004) and it will be gratifying to work for a university again. Kevin Woodward (M.A. 1991) After five years as the business writer at The Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig, I took an associate editor position at Card Technology in November. CT is magazine that covers the smart card industry; it is published by Thomson Media in Chicago. Additionally, I continue to freelance for Business Travel Executive, a magazine for corporate travel managers that is edited by another Iowa alum. I also recently completed a four-year stint as an associate faculty member in the English Department at John Wood Community College in Quincy. (1-20-05)
Leah Reinstein (B.A. 2000) was accepted as an English Language Teaching Fellow (ELF), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, for the fellowship period extending through June 2005. Leah will be teaching English to journalists and other employees at Macedonia Radio and Television in Skopje, Macedonia and is the first fellow appointed to this media agency. She received her BA in English and Journalism from the University of Iowa in 2000 and her MA in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University earlier this year. (10-8-94)
Neil Brown (B.A. 1981) was named executive editor of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times Wednesday after serving the past nine years as managing editor and a vice president. Brown joined the Times in 1993 as world editor, overseeing coverage of Washington and national politics, as well as foreign coverage. Before that he spent five years in Washington, D.C., at Times affiliate Congressional Quarterly, including nearly four years as CQ's managing editor. He also worked for eight years as a reporter and editor at the Miami Herald. Brown has served as president of the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors, a professional association of newspaper journalists. Originally from Chicago, Brown graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, majoring in journalism and political science. The newspaper is based in Florida. Brian K. Read (B.A. 1979) Professor, Television Dept. Columbia College, Chicago. I was the Video Producer/Photographer for the new "Crown Fountain," in Chicago's Millennium Park. The fountain features two fifty-foot towers, positioned at either end of a long reflecting pool, with large high-definition video monitors that display images of "faces of Chicago" as water cascades down and over them, into the pool below.

Working with Spanish video artist Jaume Plensa, along with faculty and staff from both the Art Institute Of Chicago and Columbia College, I used a Sony High Definition video camera (model HD900) to photograph the faces of over 800 Chicagoans. The images are being displayed at random, each for about five minutes. The video sculpture-installation is commissioned to run for thirty years. (8-29-04)

Amanda Gorsche Miller (M.A. 2002) I have been appointed Public Relations Specialist at Flynn Wright, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa. Flynn Wright is an agency specializing in advertising, marketing, public relations, research and interactive media. I get to use my skills as a former television news producer and newspaper reporter and my degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, to work with local and national media on behalf of our clients. Meredith Hines-Dochterman (B.A. 1997) I was recently selected as one of 19 journalists nationwide for the 2004 class of Journalism Fellowships in Child and Family Policy.

Based at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, the professional-development program aims to deepen journalists' and the public's understanding of how social policies and programs affect young lives.

I'll go to Washington D.C. from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 for briefings with policy experts and practitioners, related field trips and professional training. I'll return to Washington for a week in late January to pursue a reporting project of my own choice.

I am beginning my fifth year as the elementary and secondary education reporter for the St. Joseph News-Press in St. Joseph, MO. I also cover family and parenting issues, with twice-monthly stories featured in the paper's Sunday features section, and write for Josephine, the newspaper's monthly women's magazine. (6-1-04)

1) After several years of struggling with disability due to a chronic pain condition, I am now back to teaching -- this time online for the Communication Department of the University of Maryland University College. Although this is only part-time, I am thrilled to be back in the "classroom" and looking forward to the special opportunities provided by online education.

2) I started a weblog Feb. 18, 2004, that I call "Random Acts of Love." It includes wide-ranging commentary on everything from living with disabilities to media criticism; being a grandmother to being a political activist; being an artist, writer, photographer, and educator; living in Western New York; and being a Quaker -- written with both humor and serious purpose. Brittnee E. Henry (B.A. 2002) has been named director of Speedway Children's Charities, Texas. SCC is a foundation which gives grants to children's charities in the counties surrounding Texas Motor Speedway. Her work will include corporate relations, event planning and promotion in order to raise much-needed funds for children's charities. The events for SCC correspond with race weekends at Texas Motor Speedway.

Rebecca Snyders, MA Journalism, 1986, has been named Executive Director of the Oregon and Western Washington Chapter of Healing the Children: a national non-profit organization that provides donated medical care to needy children world wide. Snyders lives in Mill Creek Washington with her husband Russell and two children Ryan and Meredith. (1-21-04)

Deanna DeLuco (B.A. 2000) recently joined JSH&A Public Relations (Oakbrook Terrace, IL) as senior account executive. In this position, DeLuco will execute and oversee the implementation of public relations and marketing programs for current clients, including Jim Beam Brands Co. and SIRVA, Inc.

Prior to joining JSH&A, DeLuco worked at Publicis Dialog in Chicago, where she most recently was responsible for accounts such as the Principal Financial Group, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services‚ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Stri-Dex. Participating in numerous nationwide campaigns, including the CDC‚ s VERB. It's what you do. campaign, DeLuco's work has covered the spectrum of integrated marketing communications, including research, strategic planning, trade and consumer media relations, Web site development, event planning and corporate communications. Cultural and critical scholars from across the US, Europe, and Asia met at the University of Iowa for a one-day conference honoring the career of Hanno Hardt, UI professor emeritus of Journalism and Communication Studies.

The meeting, called a “Festschrift” in the German tradition of celebrating a noted scholar, took place on October 18, 2003.
