John Bennett's research interests are in the process and forms of depth reporting, literary journalism, and the effective use of words and images in print and electronic media.
Bennett's B.A. is in English literature. In his early professional years, he worked as a reporter-photographer and city editor for the Post Advocate in Alhambra, Calif. He also worked as a freelance photographer in Los Angeles for five years. He taught reporting and photojournalism at the University of California at Los Angeles and at Indiana University. In 1978 he came to The University of Iowa where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in depth reporting, journalistic writing, media production, and media criticism.
He received the outstanding faculty award from the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 1990 and 1991
