Curriculum Vitae
Dan Berkowitz's research interests focus on the sociology of news work, especially the relationship between media and community, and the process of newsmaking in local television. He teaches public relations, research methods, sociology of news work, and computer-assisted reporting.
He was director of research and communication at Associated Oregon Loggers and information representative for the Department of Environmental Quality in Eugene, OR.; public information specialist at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, OR.; and a public relations consultant and freelance writer. He also has worked as announcer/community affairs director at KATA, Arcata, CA.
Berkowitz holds a B.S. degree in forest resource management, an M.S. degree in journalism, and a Ph.D. degree in mass communications. He joined the Iowa faculty in 1988.
His articles have appeared in academic journals including Journal of
Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journal of Communication, Journal
of Public Relations Research, Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism,
Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Ecquid Novi, and International
Journal of Public Opinion Research. His book, Social Meanings of
News: A Text-Reader, was published in 1997. He also has written articles
for Ragan Report, Editor's Workshop Newsletter, Communication World,
and Guitar Player.
He received the top research paper award from the Radio-Television Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 1986, 1989, and 1994, from the Media Ethics Division in 2001, and a Top 3 paper from the Public Relations Division in 1997.
