Richard Johns' research area is scholastic journalism. He teaches journalism methods; secondary school journalism/publication advising; and introduction to teaching English, speech, and journalism.
After receiving a B.A. degree in business education and journalism, Johns taught high school English, journalism, and business and was yearbook and newspaper adviser in Indiana. In addition, he worked as a local correspondent for the Calumet Press. He received an M.A. degree in journalism education. From 1968 to 1971, he was the director of the Iowa High School Press Association.
Since 1972, Johns has been the editor and business manager for Quill & Scroll magazine, executive director of Quill and Scroll Society, and a member of the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty. In 1974 he completed Ph.D. comprehensive exams in the secondary school curriculum, administration, and journalism education.
He is a member of the ERIC/RCS Advisory Board (Clearinghouse on Reading and Communications Skills), Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.; a member of the Executive Committee for the Student Press Law Center, Washington, D.C.; and the Advisory Board for Journalism Secondary Education at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.
Johns was a contributing editor to the fifth edition of Journalism Today! by Donald L. Ferguson and Jim Patton.
He received the outstanding faculty award from the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 1992-93.
