Kenneth Starck's research interests are in intercultural journalism, the journalistic process, and press responsibility. He teaches international communication, journalistic reporting and writing, and intercultural journalism courses.

For 17 years between 1975 and 1996, Starck served as director of the school. He was a Fulbright Professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, China (1986-87), and at the University of Bucharest in Romania, (1994-95).

He received a B.A. degree in English, an M.A. degree in journalism, and a Ph.D. degree in journalism with minors in educational philosophy and international affairs. He also worked as news bureau director for Wartburg College and then as instructor and director of the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association. He worked as a reporter for the Herald and Review in Decatur, Ill., and as education editor for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn. He taught at Southern Illinois University, the University of Tampere in Finland, and the University of South Carolina before joining the school's faculty in 1974. He also serves as consulting ombudsperson for The Gazette Family of Companies, Cedar Rapids.

He is author of The Dragon's Pupils: A China Odyssey (1991). Starck has co-authored two other books: Public Relations and Community: A Reconstructed Theory (1988) and Backtalk: Press Councils in America (1972). He co-edited and contributed to the book Perspectives in American Studies: A Reader by American Scholars in China (1988). He also has authored or co-authored chapters in four books and four monographs.

His articles have been published in the Global Network, Australian Journalism Review, Ecquid Novi, Journalism Quarterly, Gazette (The Netherlands), Journal of Experimental Education, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Journalism Educator, Grassroots Editor, Editor & Publisher, Communication: Journalism Education Today, Journal of Education, Journalism Studies Review, and Media Development.
