University of Iowa Broadcast Journalism Students Win State Awards

University of Iowa broadcast journalism students came away with 26 trophies at the Iowa Broadcast News Association at their 2008 IBNA Spring Convention May 3 in Waterloo. Twenty-one of those awards went to students who work for Daily Iowan TV, the television service of The Daily Iowan, which was picked as “Best Newscast” in the IBNA student division for the second straight year. Radio broadcasting student Kyle Gassiott won five personal awards for his stories at Iowa Public Radio station WSUI, Iowa City. The awards were for work broadcast in 2007. [See details below.]

Ellingson (sports reporter), and Forrest Saunders (reporter). UI students won 26 awards in the IBNA student market division.

Daily Iowan TV News director, Jay Knoll, a broadcast journalism student who himself won two awards said, “These awards are evidence to how much our staff at Daily Iowan TV has grown into professional student-journalists.” Knoll noted that Daily Iowan TV swept two key categories, winning all places in the “Best Spot News Coverage” and “Excellence in Writing” categories. Gassiott swept the Excellence in Writing in the radio student division.

“It is great that our students were recognized in this way by broadcast professionals from around the state, but what’s incredible is that they swept every single award for ‘Excellence in Writing’ - a wonderful tribute to their dedication to being professionals themselves” said Charles Munro, Visiting Instructor at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Daily Iowan TV Coach.

Daily Iowan TV is managed and produced five days a week during the academic year by University of Iowa students. The newscast can be seen Sunday through Thursday nights at 9:30 pm on UITV cable (Mediacom in Eastern Iowa) as well as on DailyIowan.Com.

The Iowa Broadcast News Association is a nonprofit corporation of radio-TV news directors, reporters, producers, public relations professionals and others from Iowa and its adjacent states, working together to improve electronic media news for stations and the public.
