Our Workshops

Newspaper/Newsmagazine
Some of the finest newspapers in the county are edited and produced by former students of this workshop. Students are placed in small groups for beginning, intermediate and advanced writers, section editors and editors, lead by talented instructors. Whether your newspaper or newsmagazine is printed offset, desktop published or is a page in a local newspaper, learn how to motivate and coach your staff as well as to textually and graphically redesign your newspaper for next year!

Yearbook
Make your yearbook a 'must have' at your school. Former Yearbook Workshop students have produced nationally recognized publications. They learned to apply journalistic skills, to be the best in writing, editing, cover and graphic design, creating headlines, cropping photos, writing cutlines, and developing themes. Instruction also addresses business practices, organization, and understanding legal and ethical issues. Much instruction is one-on-one, presented in fun and motivating lessons. Bring your staff to team build, plan and get a jump on next year's book!

Photojournalism
Photojournalism principles are the key to providing the best visual storytelling in your school's publications. That applies to both digital and film photography platforms. This workshop focuses on photojournalistic principles and their application to both film and digital cameras. Digital photo manipulation also will be taught, using Photoshop. Personalized instruction lends attention to students whether they're beginners or advanced, staff photographers or photo editors. Learn to troubleshoot daily assignments, improve visual storytelling and ways to manage photo assignments and images libraries.

Broadcast
Explore the fundamentals of reporting, writing, editing and producing the broadcast media. Students get hands-on experience using professional grade digital video cameras and editing suites, located in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications' state-of-the art electronic media laboratory. Learn Final Cut Pro editing software, widely used within the profession. Work on a final project appropriate for use on television.

Publication Design and Redesign
Students working on a school newspaper, news magazine, yearbook, or literary magazine will gain hands-on experience with the latest in desktop publishing design and layout. Get help redesigning your publication while learning design and production techniques with the use of Microsoft Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Beginners to students with substantial desktop experience will benefit.

Web Site Design
You'll quickly learn how much fun it is to create web pages as you create and design an attractive, useful web site. This workshop is geared for students who are considering or have produced journalism-related publications online. Covers basic production and design principles of web pages using Dreamweaver software, the use of your choice of content and the application of journalistic skills. Students will work toward a final project of a web site ready to launch!
