Each of our workshops carries one to three semester hours of graduate credit, by the decision of the student. Attend one, two, or three workshops this summer, and learn in the state-of-the-art Adler Journalism Building. Tuition is $359 per semester hour. Classes meet Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Publication Advising: Yearbooks and Newspapers/Newsmagazines

Essentials of publication advising for beginning advisers, and career enhancements for experienced advisers are provided. Current trends and basic principles in yearbook, newspaper and news magazine design and production will be addressed, as will planning, coordinating with a yearbook company or printer, developing an editorial policy, budgets, and job descriptions. Learn tips for selecting staff members, providing reporting, writing, and theme development instruction, working with photos and photographers, and understanding legal and ethical issues. The world-famous writing environment of Iowa City and the University of Iowa are tapped in this workshop teaching techniques, methodologies and practices in journalistic writing, reporting and editing for secondary school teachers. Pre-writing strategies and activities to get students started on their next persuasive, narrative or reflective writing assignment will be explored. Review and practice journalistic principles and apply them to teaching approaches to get your students involved in multiple media formats, including Web-based news, video and podcasts. Visual Communication: Publication Design InDesign and Photoshop

Learn to combine text, headlines, photos, and infographics to design/redesign exciting and effective newspaper pages, yearbook and magazine spreads using InDesign and Photoshop. Develop skills to use Photoshop to improve image quality and create sophisticated graphics. Areas covered will include design and layout principles, typography, informational graphics, photography, and the effective use of color.
