Personal qualifications and professional potential are assessed by means of three letters of recommendation and a written statement of purpose. What kind of students are we seeking? Persons with intellectual ability who are people-oriented, service-oriented, conscientious and self-confident, who display initiative and resourcefulness in identifying and solving problems, who display good judgment and tact and have a passion for providing client-centered information services, and who are willing to accept and effect change and are eager to assume leadership roles. Applicants are expected to have basic computer competencies. In addition, applicants whose native or official language is not English are required to achieve a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based (213 on the computer-based) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Application for Graduate Admission Call or e-mail the school and request an admissions packet, or download the application form or apply online at: http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/graduate/apply/index.html. 2. Statement of Purpose 3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test If you have not already taken the GRE General Test, arrange to do so as soon as possible. For information on the GRE test, visit GRE Online at http://www.gre.org or call 609-771-7670 and request the GRE Information & Registration Bulletin.4. Letters of Recommendation Your three letters of recommendation should come from persons who can assess the scope and quality of your past academic or professional work. At least one should be an academic reference. There are no special forms for these letters, but they should be written on the recommender's letterhead and should indicate the writer's name and his or her association with you (e.g., instructor, employer, supervisor). Top of Page | SLIS Home | UI Home Admission Dates and Decisions For August Admission: Applications not complete by the deadline will not be considered. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials have been received. Email slis@uiowa.edu to check the status of your application. Late applications are considered if places are still available. Financial aid, however, often is not available for late applicants. An Admissions Committee of three faculty members considers all completed applications and selects those to be admitted to the school. Enrollment is limited, and decisions are made on a competitive basis; not all applicants meeting the minimum requirements are accepted. National Scholarships in Library and Information Science The following organizations offer awards of $1,000 or more to attend an ALA-accredited master's degree program. For information on specific awards (eligibility, factors considered, deadlines, etc.) contact the organizations directly or use the email links where available.
The American Library Association offers the following scholarships for master's-level study in library and information science. A listing of the scholarships, eligibility requirements, and applications can be obtained online at: http://www.ala.org/hrdr/scholarship.html. Contact the ALA Scholarship Program at: scholarships@ala.org. A flyer listing scholarships offered by ALA and its divisions is also available free from the Office for Library Personnel Resources, ALA, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611. A comprehensive directory of awards, Financial Assistance for Library and Information Studies, is available for $1.00 from the ALA office listed above. It includes awards from academic institutions as well as state library agencies and national and state library associations.
