Candace Fleming
Candace Fleming is the versatile and award-winning author
of several books for children, including MUNCHA! MUNCHA! MUNCHA! (Simon
& Schuster, 2002) which was an American Library Association Notable
Book, a SchoolLibrary Journal Best Book and the 2005 California Young
Reader Medalist. The book was recently named one of "Ten New
Classics" by Bank Street
College of Education. She has also written OUR ELEANOR (Simon &
Schuster 2005) and BEN
FRANKLIN'S ALMANAC (Simon & Schuster, 2004), both named ALA Notable
Book, as well as Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library
Association, Publisher's Weekly Best Books and School Library Best
Books. Other books include, BOXES FOR KATJE (FSG, 2003), the 2006
California Young Reader Medalist, LOWJI DISCOVERS AMERICA (Simon &
Schuster, 2005), and GATOR GUMBO (FSG, 2004). Her latest book, TIPPY-TIPPY-TIPPY-HIDE
(a sequel to MUNCHA! MUNCHA! MUNCHA!) will be published in Spring,
2007.
Deborah Hopkinson
Deborah
Hopkinson has been an award winning author since her first picture
book, SWEET CLARA AND THE FREEDOM QUILT , won the 1994 International
Reading Association Award. Iillustrated by James Ransome, SWEET CLARA
was also a Reading Rainbow, Children's Book-of-the-Month Club selection
and notable book in the field of Social Studies. Her second picture
book, BIRDIE's LIGHTHOUSE, illustrated by Kimberly Bulcken Root, received
a Parents Choice Silver Honor. A BAND OF ANGELS, A Story Inspired
by the Jubilee Singers, illustrated by Raul Colon, was an ALA Notable.
FANNIE IN THE KITCHEN, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter, was a Smithsonian
Notable book and a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2001. Her other
2001 title, BLUEBIRD SUMMER, received the Golden Kite Honor Award
for best picture book text. In 2003, UNDER THE QUILT OF NIGHT was
named a winner of the Washington State Book Award. GIRL WONDER won
the Great Lakes Book Award, was a Jane Addams Children's Book Award
honor book, a CCBC Choices, and an Amelia Bloomer Project title. SHUTTING
OUT THE SKY was a Booklist Editors' Choice, Booklinks Lasting Connections,
NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor book, and a Jane Addams Children's Book Award
Honor book. APPLES to OREGON won the Golden Kite Award, Spur Award,
and was an ALA Notable book.
Alexandria LaFaye
Alexandria
LaFaye has published seven novels for middle-grade readers, six of
them historical novels. Her most recently published book, Worth, is
set in Nebraska during the era of the orphan trains. It was awarded
the Scott O’Dell Award for historical fiction, a Nebraska Book
Award, a California Book Award, and was listed on numerous "Best
Book" lists. The Year of the Sawdust Man and Edith Shay
were on the Best Book list for Bank Street College of Education.
The Strength of Saints was awarded a Notable Children’s Book
award by the Smithsonian Institute. An associate professor of English
at California State University in San Bernardino, she also teaches
regularly in the Hollins University MA program and in the Writing
for Children and Young Adults program at Hamline University. Alexandria
describes herself as a traveler who enjoys meeting writers, teachers,
librarians, and young readers all over the country.
