Guidelines for Transfer and Substitution of Courses

 

Application procedures

All applications must be submitted in hard copy writing to the departmental secretary.  Applications will be evaluated by the Transfer and Substitution Committee, whose decisions are final.  This committee will meet once a month while applications are pending, during Fall and Spring semesters only. The committee will not meet during the summer or between semesters.

 

Transfers

Applications for transfer will consist of hard copies of

·        justification based on a course's applicability to the student's LIS program

·        course syllabus

·        transcript (official transcripts must also be submitted to the UI Office of Graduate Admissions; international documents should also be submitted to UI Office of International Admissions)

·        a chart which compares the course taken to a SLIS course and identifies specific content areas; credit hours; and course requirements (click here for example)

 

Substitutions for Core Courses

Applications for substituting courses offered by other departments for core courses in SLIS will consist of hard copies of:

·     justification that addresses issues of equivalence in terms of content, credit hours, work load

·     course syllabus

·     transcript

 

Independent study may not be substituted for core courses (see MA Chart for a listing of core courses at http://www.uiowa.edu/~libsci/machart.html and

Elective Credit through Non-LIS Courses

Applications for elective credit in LIS through courses offered by other departments will consist of hard copies of:

·     justification that addresses issues of relevance to LIS as well as equivalence in terms of credit hours and work load.

·     course syllabus

·     transcript
