African Language Instruction is provided by the Linguistics Department. Currently,
Swahili is offered, with Elementary and Intermediate Swahili being taught
every year. Successful completion of the two-year sequence in Swahili satisfies
the Foreign Language General Education Requirement. Instruction in other African
languages can sometimes be arranged.
Swahili is taught by native or near-native speakers. The classroom emphasis
is on oral communication skills with most of the instruction being in the
target language. In addition to language skills, aspects of the culture are
also discussed.
