Swahili Program at Iowa

The program of African Language Instruction at the University of Iowa was started in 1991, and KiSwahili was the first language offered. Yoruba is now also taught. Housed in the Department of Linguistics in the English and Philosophy Building, the program offers four semesters of Swahili instruction; two semesters at the Elementary level and two at the Intermediate level. Some of our students have gone on to work in countries where Kiswahili is spoken, either as Peace Corps volunteers, teachers, or researchers. Others have found work with Non-Governmental Organisations based in USA but which occassionally issue reports in Kiswahili. At least one of the student is working with a fund raising organization based in a US city which hosts several immigrants.
