The Society of Undergraduate Mediaevalists (SUM)
What is SUM?
The Society of Undergraduate Mediaevalists exists to provide a place for undergraduates interested in the interdisciplinary field of Medieval Studies to participate in activities such as movie nights, lectures, feasts, and nights of fun. While the primary goal of SUM is to bring students with similar interests together, we also wish to make learning about the Middle Ages fun.
How can I get involved?
We have a number of events throughout the semester. These will be posted here as they are announced. Feel free to come to any and all of them. If you would like to be added to our ListServ, send an email to christine-miles@uiowa.edu with the subject "SUM ListServ".
Upcoming Events
The UI is playing host this year to the Medieval Association of the Midwest annual conference, which will be happening on Thursday and Friday, September 16 and 17. About sixty faculty and graduate students from the campus, the state, and the region will come and give 20-minute scholarly papers open to folks who register for the conference. There will be two big-hitter scholars who will give hour long public lectures that will be open to everyone, namely:
John D. Niles, University of Wisconsin--Madison, will give a keynote lecture: "The Myth of the Feud in Anglo-Saxon England" in the Bijou Theatre (166 IMU), 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 16.
Carolyn Dinshaw, New York University, will give a keynote lecture: "How Soon is Now? Problems of the Present, Medieval and Modern" in the Bijou Theatre (166 IMU), 1:30-3 p.m. on Friday, September 17.
