Make Monday, January 21st, your day on-not a day off—by volunteering in our local community in honor of Dr. King’s memory. Our campus will join with others across the country who “keep the dream alive” through service activities on the MLK Holiday.
Participate locally on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 21, 2008 in one of three ways!
1. Join students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers as they honor the life and work of Dr. King by participating in several organized service events at pre-arranged service sites in and around Iowa City. For more information about this event, visit the Corridor Volunteers website at: http://www.volunteersolutions.org/uwjc/org/opp/10253476040.html.
Alternatively, you can email the Civic Engagement Program Coordinator at civic-engagement@uiowa.edu to obtain additional details.
2. Spend the day helping others on your own or with another group of your choice. Check out the official MLK Day “How to Serve” website for ideas, http://www.mlkday.gov/about/how/index.asp. Having a “day on” could be something as simple as assisting a neighbor with a project that requires an extra set of hands, shoveling snow for someone who is not able, visiting home-bound elders in your neighborhood or a local care facility. Be creative—be of service!

If you choose to arrange your own service option, we’d like to hear about how you spend your day (e-mail us at: civic-engagement@uiowa.edu). Keep us informed and we’ll include your information on the list of those who had a “day on” through service that will be announced at the Community Convocation (see below).
3. Come to The University of Iowa MLK, Jr. Humans Right Week 2008 Community Convocation on Monday, January 21, 2008 from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the 2nd Floor Ballroom of the IMU. MLK Day of Service projects will be announced and participants recognized at this event.
