What is the effect of re-conceptualizing
an English Major as a major in Literatures in English? What are the consequences
upon courses drawn from, and curricula based upon, traditionally discrete
national literatures, primarily British and American literatures? What new
kinds of courses are made possible by such a configuration? What happens to
students and their understanding of English in this model? To what extent
does the global rise of literatures in English compel us to rethink the notion,
direction, and integrity of the received literary canon?
These and related questions will
be the focus of a panel presentation and discussion moderated by members of
the Department of English, Saint Olaf College. While we will provide 2-3 brief
starter statements of a few minutes each, we will then turn the conversation
over to colleagues from other departments. We invite M/MLA members to contact
us by September 30 if they would like to contribute to the panel and discussion,
or if they would like more information about the session. Email: durocher@stolaf.edu.
