Welcome to Montage 2007

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Montage, a peer-reviewed on-line journal produced annually by graduate students in art history from across the country and compiled by members of The University of Iowa Graduate Art History Society (AHS). Every year AHS sponsors a graduate student symposium dealing with a specific art historical theme. This year’s theme was "Elements of Architecture: History, Theory and Criticism", an intentionally broad topic which coincided with the dedication of the new art building on the University of Iowa campus designed by the internationally renowned architect, Stephen Holl.

A montage is a collaboration of forms or a collage created from various materials which, when viewed together, form a cohesive whole. Viewed individually, each of the student papers contained in the journal stands alone as a contributing work of scholarship. Yet when viewed collectively, the writings and their various interdisciplinary approaches solidify a central theme. It is my hope – and that of Managing Editor, Claire Kovacs and On-line Editor, Megan Masana – that this journal will continue for years to come, serving as a prime example of scholastic excellence on the part of graduate students from a range of disciplines, all focused on a central theme of art historical significance.
