About the School of Music

The University of Iowa School of Music has long been recognized as one of the excellent university-based schools of music in the U.S. Its international reputation within the fine arts community attracts the highest-caliber students in graduate and undergraduate programs for performance, conducting, composition, musicology, theory, music therapy, and music education. The school’s enrollment of approximately 450 students majoring in music is large enough to sustain strong programs in all areas of specialization, yet small enough to ensure the individual attention essential to each student’s development.

The music faculty consists of highly trained and internationally recognized artist-teachers in every area of specialization. Private lessons with faculty members are offered in all band and orchestra instruments, voice, piano, and organ.

Voxman Music Building has one of the nation’s finest facilities for teaching and performance in music. In addition to classrooms, the music facilities include more than 50 teaching studios, 73 practice rooms, a comprehensive music library, three electronic music studios, ear training and listening facilities, four large rehearsal halls, professional recording studios, an Instructional Technology Center including 30 computers with MIDI synthesizers and music-related software, seven practice and recital organs, and the 700-seat Clapp Recital Hall.

In 2000, the university formed the Division of Performing Arts in an effort to foster collaboration and artistic exchange between the artists in music, dance, and theatre, and to expand public awareness of artistic and scholarly work. Kristin Thelander is director of the School of Music.
