Jerry Cain

Jerry Cain teaches graduate courses in twentieth-century and American music, as well as undergraduate courses in American ethnic popular musics and music appreciation. He holds a Ph.D and M.M. in Historical Musicology from the Florida State University, and an M.M. and B.M. in Music Education from Appalachian State University. Before his appointment at The University of Iowa, he taught at Gardner-Webb University, Appalachian State University, and Central Piedmont Community College in North Carolina.

Dr. Cain’s dissertation research involved the study of Anton Webern’s largely unpublished song settings of poems by the prominent and controversial Viennese journalist, playwright and poet, Karl Kraus. In addition to his interest in the music of the Second Viennese School, Dr. Cain has active research and performance interests in the music of the 16th and 17th centuries, and has directed and performed in Renaissance and Baroque instrumental ensembles. He has also presented papers on a number of other diverse topics, including the compositional process of Felix Mendelssohn, the liturgical music of German Lutheran communities in early 17th-century Slovakia, and performance practice issues related to the Faenza Codex.
