Bassoon Auditions

Students are strongly encouraged to audition in person on the campus of The University of Iowa. A tape or CD of an unedited recent live performance may be submitted if a live audition is not possible. For more information please contact Professor Benjamin Coelho (benjamin-coelho@uiowa.edu).

Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees

  • One etude
  • One movement or solo piece from the standard repertory
  • One additional work in a contrasting style

Suggested undergraduate bassoon etude repertory: Weissenborn, Advanced Studies; Milde, Scale and Chord Etudes Op. 25; Milde, Concert Etudes Op. 26, vol. 1; Slama 66 Studies

Suggested undergraduate bassoon solo repertoire: Concertos by Vivaldi, Weber, Kozeluh, and David. Sonatas and solo pieces: Besozzi, Sonata in Bb; Bourdeau, Premier solo, Corelli, Sonata in D minor; Elgar, Romance; Galliard, Six Sonatas; Hindemith, Sonata; Pierne, Concertpiece Op. 35; Phillips, Concert Piece; and Telemann, Sonata in f minor.

Graduate degrees (MA, MFA, DMA)

  • One slow etude from Milde Concert Studies Op. 26, vol. 2 (26-50)
  • Mozart Bassoon Concerto (with cadenzas)
  • Two movements or solo piece from the standard repertory
  • One additional work written in the last 50 years (DMA only)

Suggested bassoon solo repertoire: Concertos by Françaix, Jolivet, Hummel, Vivaldi, Weber, and Williams. Sonatas and solo pieces by Bitsch, Boutry, Cascarino, Devienne, Dutilleux, Etler, Fasch, Elgar, Hindemith, Hurlstone, Koechlin, Mignone, Nussio, Saint-Saëns, and Tansman.

Works not on these lists may be used for an audition with advance approval from Professor Coelho (benjamin-coelho@uiowa.edu)
