Piano Audition Requirements

Undergraduate Studies

Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts

The B.M. or B.A. audition should include a minimum of 15 minutes of solo piano repertoire. While the complete program may be heard, the candidate should be prepared to perform sections of music as requested by the committee. The audition repertoire should consist of a minimum of two memorized solo piano works selected from different historical periods. An audition in person on the campus of The University of Iowa is preferred. A tape or CD of an unedited recent live performance including the above repertoire requirements may be submitted if a live audition is not feasible.

Acceptance to undergraduate performance degree programs in the piano area is dependent upon a successful audition and the approval of the application materials by the Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies. The piano area gives priority for admission and scholarships to BM and BA candidates whose auditions and applications are completed by April 1. Later candidates will be considered according to studio space and scholarship availability.

Undergraduate piano majors are taught by piano professors, not teaching assistants. Requests for a particular professor are honored pending studio size.
