Fall 2009 Choral Auditions

We welcome all students (majors and non-majors) and members of the community to audition for one of four ensembles at The University of Iowa. Each ensemble presents individual concerts throughout the year, but also combines with the UIowa Symphony Orchestra to perform major choral/orchestral works. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your audition!

Here is some information for you about the choirs and the audition:

Ensembles

There are four ensembles that rehearse and perform. All ensembles program excellent literature exploring multiple genres and periods from both Western and non-Western traditions. You will be placed in a choir that best matches your ability level and schedule.

  1. Kantorei meets Monday through Thursday from 1:30-2:20.
  2. University Choir meets Monday through Thursday from 2:30-3:20.
  3. Womens Choir (or University Chorale) meets Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:20.
  4. Camerata meets Tuesday and Thursday from 7:15-9:15 in the evening.

Auditions take place in either the CSM 5 or CSM 6 building on Clinton Street (CSM= Clinton Street Music). Check your Wiki sign up for specific locations.

Audition Procedures

You will be asked to do the following in your audition:

  1. Sing simple exercises to show your range (how high and low)
  2. Sing one piece of your choosing or, if you do not have a piece to sing, we will
have you sing something else you know; an accompanist will be provided for you
if you bring a prepared piece
  3. Listen to pitches and sing them back
  4. Sight sing your part of a choir piece that you do not know with accompaniment

Results of Auditions

We do everything we can to place you in a choir that is perfect for your ability level and schedule. However, there are times that we are not able to place certain individuals because their schedule will not allow them to be placed in the choir that best suits them. Please be assured that we want you to succeed and will do everything we can to help you do your best in your audition.
