Graduate Degrees - Brass
Master of Arts

The M.A. degree in performance (brass) requires a minimum of 35 postbaccalaureate
semester hours, of which at least 24 must be earned at The University
of Iowa.
A. Specific Admission Requirements
- Minimum undergraduate grade point average: 3.0
- Three letters of recommendation
- A current resumé, including programs of recitals given,
repertoire studied, and a listing of present and former brass teachers
- Application and audition
- Application for admission to this degree will not be processed
until an approved audition has been completed. Acceptance to the
performance degree program in the brass area is dependent upon
acceptance by the major professor and the approval of the Associate
Director of Graduate Studies. Completing the application by February
1 will enhance the possibility of being admitted the following
fall semester; later applications will be considered if openings
remain.
- An audition on the campus is preferred. The audition should
consist of a variety of materials to demonstrate the performer's
ability and musicianship. If a personal audition is not feasible,
a recording representative of current abilities may be submitted
with the approval of the area faculty.
- A recorded audition should be at least thirty minutes in length
and should include solos with accompaniment and other musical
material (etudes, orchestral excerpts, etc.) which demonstrate
the applicant's ability and musicianship. Senior recital recordings
may be accepted if the recital was recently presented.
- A senior recital by an undergraduate student already enrolled
at the University of Iowa may serve as the M.A. audition provided
the major professor is notified of this intent prior to the recital.
B. Recital and Final Exam Committees
Both committees, selected by the student and approved by the applied
teacher, shall consist of three members. Both committees must include
the major applied teacher and at least one other faculty member from
the brass area.
The student must be prepared to present to the recital committee an advsiory hearing at least 10 days prior to the recital. In the event a recital is unacceptable, one additional recital (with different repertoire) may be given, subject to the same evaluation.
Master of Fine Arts

The M.F.A. is for students of superior ability in instrumental or vocal performance. It requires a minimum of 60 s.h. of postbaccalaureate study, including two full-length recitals or programs. The M.F.A. requires a Thesis (25:401) consisting of a research paper of moderate length; the M.F.A. Thesis may relate to some or all of the repertoire included on the recitals.
Students may earn a Master of Arts degree while working toward the Master of Fine Arts degree, but must take two separate final examinations.
Doctor of Musical Arts

The D.M.A. degree in performance and pedagogy requires a minimum of
72 postbaccalaureate semester hours. Full-time residency is required
for two semesters (minimum of 9 s.h. coursework), or if the student
holds a Teaching Assistantship of 25% time or more, the residency requirement
may be fulfilled with three semesters of 6 s.h. coursework.

- The audition should include materials as listed below and should
be at least 40 minutes in duration. An audition may be repeated
once at the discretion of the examining committee. While the complete
program may be heard, the candidate should be prepared to perform
sections of music as requested by the committee.
- Students pursuing a performance M.A. degree at the University
of Iowa may use the Master's recital as the D.M.A. audition, provided
the audition committee is notified of this intent prior to the
recital.
B. D.M.A. Audition
- General Requirements - all brass
- Two solos, selected from different historical periods of music,
and of difficulty and quality appropriate for performance at the
doctoral level. Applicant should bring an accompanist if at all
possible.
- Etudes (see below)
- Orchestral excerpts (see below)
- Trumpet Audition
- One etude selected from Brandt - Vacciano Orchestral Studies
(MCA Music), and one etude selected from Charlier Etudes Transcendantes
(Leduc).
- Performance of "standard" orchestral excerpts selected from
any volume of excerpts by Bartold, Voisin, or Rossbach (International),
or by Neubaus (Musikverlag Hans Gerig).
- Horn Audition
- Two etudes selected from Books 5 or 6 of Maxime-Alphonse 200
Etudes Nouvelles (Leduc), Gallay Op. 32 or 43, or Reynolds
48 Etudes (Schirmer).
- Performance of "standard" orchestral excerpts.
- Trombone and Bass Trombone Audition
- Etudes
- Tenor trombone: one etude selected from Boutry, Douze
Etudes de Haute Perfectionnement (Leduc).
- Bass trombone: one etude selected from Blazhevich, 70
Studies for Tuba.
- Performance of "standard" orchestral excerpts.
- Tuba Audition
- One etude selected from Bordogni 43 Bel Canto Studies and one etude selected from Kopprasch 60 Selected Studies
- Performance of “standard” orchestral excerpts
C. Specific Performance Requirements
- Qualifying Recital
This recital is to be presented by the end of the second semester
of registration (excluding summer session). In the event a qualifying
recital is unacceptable, one additional recital with different repertoire
may be given at the discretion of the examining committee. A UI master's
recital may serve as a qualifying recital with the prior approval
of the area; a full doctoral recital committee of five members must
hear the recital.
- 25:503 D.M.A Recital (3-6 s.h.)
Three acceptable full-length recitals, one of which may be a concerto
performance with orchestra or other appropriate ensemble. Students
have the option of requesting that the qualifying recital count as
one of the three required recitals; this request must be approved
by the brass area in advance. In the event a DMA recital is unacceptable,
one additional recital with different repertoire may be given in a
subsequent semester, subject to the same evaluation. A maximum of
one non-pass recital is allowed.
D. Language Requirement or Secondary Area of Music
The D.M.A. student has a choice of satisfying a proficiency requirement in French or German (other languages must be approved by the brass area) OR completing coursework in a Secondary Area of music. See details for these requirements on the D.M.A. checklist.
E. Committees
The recital, comprehensive exam, and thesis/essay committees are selected
by the student and his/her major professor. All members of the thesis/essay
committee and comprehensive examination committee must be members of
the UI Graduate Faculty. The major professor must be included on all
committees.
- The recital committee consists of five SOM faculty members, with
at least three members from the brass area.
- The comprehensive examination committee consists of five SOM faculty
members, with at least three members from the brass area.
- The thesis/essay committee consists of four SOM faculty members
and one faculty member from outside the SOM. This committee approves
the thesis/essay topic (Prospectus) and conducts the final examination,
an oral defense of the thesis or essay.
