Master of Arts, Band Conducting

A. Specific Admission Requirements

  1. Current resume
  2. Audition
    The application for admission as a conducting major will not be processed until an audition has been completed. An audition on campus is required. The audition is to be scheduled upon written request from the candidate in consultation with the appropriate advisor. An audition may be repeated once at the discretion of the examining committee.

B. Performance Requirements

* MA Recitals -- 4 s.h.
Acceptable presentation of 2 half recitals with the University Band or Concert Band and 1 partial recital with the chamber winds of the Symphony Band. The recitals are to be evaluated by a committee selected by the student and the major teacher. The committee shall consist of the student's major professor and at least two additional members of the School of Music faculty.

C. Additional Requirements

  1. Member of Marching Band staff each fall of residence.
  2. A minimum of 4 semesters of on-campus residence is required to complete the recital requirements.

D. Final Examination

The final examination committee is selected by the student and the major teacher. The committee shall consist of the student's major professor, a member of the theory/history faculty and at least one additional member of the School of Music faculty.

Doctor of Musical Arts, Band Conducting

A. Specific Admission Requirements

  3. Audition

The audition for admission will not be processed until an audition has been completed. An audition on campus is required. The audition is to be scheduled upon written request from the candidate in consultation with the appropriate advisor. An audition may be repeated once at the discretion of the examining committee.

B.. Language Requirement or Secondary Area of Music

The D.M.A. student has a choice of satisfying a proficiency requirement in French or German (other languages must be approved by the band area) OR completing coursework in a Secondary Area of music. See details for these requirements on the D.M.A. checklist.

C. Performance Requirements

* Doctoral Recitals -- 6 s.h.
The D.M.A. dissertation is the presentation of three half recitals with the University Band or Concert Band and two partial recitals with the chamber winds of the Symphony Band. The recitals are to be evaluated by a committee selected by the student and major advisor. The committee shall consist of the student's major professor and four members from the School of Music faculty. One work on each program is to be prepared by the student without assistance from the instructor.

D. Additional Requirements

E. Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive examination committee shall consist of the student's major professor, a member of the theory faculty, a member of the music history faculty and two additional members of the School of Music faculty.

The thesis/essay committee shall consist of the student's major professor, three members from the School of Music faculty plus one non-music faculty member.

Master of Arts, Choral Conducting

A. Specific Admission Requirements

The application for admission as a conducting major will not be processed until an audition has been completed. An audition on campus is required. The audition is to be scheduled upon written request from the candidate in consultation with the Director of Choral Activities. An audition may be repeated once at the discretion of the examining committee. The audition will include conducting, a written exam on choral topics, and solo vocal performance.

B. Committees

The recital committee is selected by the student and the major teacher. The committee shall consist of no fewer than three members and shall include the student's major professor and one other conducting professor.

The final examination committee is also selected by the student and the major teacher. The committee shall consist of three members of the graduate faculty from the School of Music, which shall include the student's major professor and one professor who will give music theory and music history questions.

C. Language Requirement

Proficiency in one language (French, German, or Italian) is required; other languages must be approved by the choral area. This requirement must be met by the end of the fourth semester.

Doctor of Musical Arts, Choral Conducting

A. Specific Admission Requirements

  1. Minimum Grade Point Average: 3.0
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. Audition

The application for admission will not be processed until an audition has been completed. An audition on campus is required. The audition is to be scheduled upon written request from the candidate inc consultation with the Director of Choral Activities. An audition may be repeated once at the discretion of the examining committee. The audition will include conducting, a written examination on choral topics, sightreading, solo vocal performance, and an example of scholarly writing.

B. Language Requirement

Proficiency in two languages (French, German or Italian) is required; other languages must be approved by the choral area. One requirement must be met by the end of the student's third semester. The second requirement must be met by the approval of the thesis proposal.

C. Specific Performance Requirements

Three D.M.A. recitals are required. The first D.M.A. recital also functions as a qualifying recital. Degree credit will not be given for a recital graded lower than B. The recitals are to be evaluated by a committee selected by the student his/her instructor, consisting of three members of the conducting staff plus two members from other areas. One number on each program is to be prepared by the student without assistance from the instructor.

D. Residence Requirement

Enrollment as a full-time student (9 semester hours minimum) in each of two semesters.

E. Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive examination committee is selected by the student and the major advisor. The committee shall consist of five members of the graduate faculty from the School of Music, including the student's major professor. The committee should include professors of conducting, voice, musicology, and theory.

F. D.M.A. Essay (4-8 s.h.)

DMA candidates must give evidence of their ability to make a scholarly investigation of limited scope by means of a written essay. The essay supervisor and essay topic are to be selected by the student and his/her advisor.

G. Committees

The essay and comprehensive examination committees are selected by the student and his/her advisor.
The comprehensive examination committee consists of five members from the School of Music. This committee evaluates the candidate's knowledge in music theory, music history, and the conducting area by means of a written comprehensive examination.

The essay committee consists of four members from the School of Music plus one non-music faculty member. The essay committee (1) approves the essay topic, and (2) conducts the final examination which is an oral defense of the essay.
