Information for Graduate StudentsGraduate Student Policies and ProceduresThe policies and procedures below, together with the official current General Catalog of the University and the Manual of Rules and Regulations of the Graduate College, should provide clear guidelines concerning all aspects of graduate study. Click here to access the Graduate Student Policies and Procedures page. Degree AreasSelect an area from the drop down menu for more information on the program, faculty, and degrees available. Master of ArtsThe Master of Arts is offered in performance, conducting, composition, music theory, musicology, music therapy, music education, and jazz studies. Performance and conducting majors present a public recital in lieu of a written thesis. The Master of Arts without thesis is offered in performance, music education, and music therapy. Both thesis/recital and nonthesis degrees require a minimum of 30-37 semester hours (sh) of postbaccalaureate study. Master of Fine ArtsThe M.F.A. is for students of superior ability in instrumental or vocal performance. It requires a minimum of 60 s.h. of postbaccalaureate study, including two full-length recitals or programs. The M.F.A. requires a Thesis (25:401) consisting of a research paper of moderate length; the M.F.A. Thesis may relate to some or all of the repertoire included on the recitals. Students may earn a Master of Arts degree while working toward the Master of Fine Arts degree, but must take two separate final examinations.” Masters Degree RequirementsPlease select an area: Doctor of PhilosophyAreas of concentration for the Ph.D. include composition, musicology, music education, music theory, and music literature. The music literature program is designed for students who already have achieved a professional level of musical performance. These students are required to audition in their major performance area. Information about specific admission and curricular requirements for each area is available from the School of Music academic office. Doctor of Musical ArtsAreas of concentration for the D.M.A. degree in performance and pedagogy are Brass, Conducting, Organ, Percussion, Piano, Strings, Voice, and Woodwinds. The D.M.A. requires three full-length recitals. At the performance area's discretion, a concerto performance with orchestra or other appropriate ensemble from the School of Music may be substituted for one of the recitals. Singers may substitute one major opera role or one major solo contribution to an orchestra performance for one of their recitals. Conductors present three programs. D.M.A. candidates also must complete a scholarly investigation of limited scope in a written essay or thesis.
