Master of Arts in Voice

The Master of Arts degree in performance is minimally a 35 semester-hour course of study in which the thesis is a full-length recital. MA Students must earn at least 24 credit hours from the University of Iowa.

Acceptance into the program requires the following:

A. A US bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Graduate Admissions, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00, or foreign equivalent.
B. Three letters of recommendation
C. Curriculum vita sent to the School of Music
D. Audition and Interview

1. The audition for the Master’s Degree program includes:

  • A program consisting of five memorized selections, which demonstrate proficiency in the four major singing languages (English, French, German and Italian).
  • A demonstration of sight-singing proficiency.
  • Under extenuating circumstances, a high quality video recording may be submitted in lieu of a live audition with approval of the Voice Faculty. Recorded auditions must satisfy the repertoire requirements previously cited. Please see “Recorded Audition Requirements” below for technical detail.

2. The audition should be completed no later than the application deadline prior to each session set by the Graduate College and Registrar. Those wishing to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship should audition no later than March 1, 2008. Priority for selection of TAs will be given to applicants auditioning in person.

3. A senior recital by an undergraduate currently enrolled in the University of Iowa School of Music Voice Area may serve as an MA audition with pre-approval of the voice faculty

Recorded Graduate Voice Admission Audition Information

 Students are strongly encouraged to audition in person. If it is not possible to audition in person, the following must be submitted to the Voice Area Program Coordinator, Voxman Music Building, The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242:

Recorded Audition Package:

  • Excellent “studio quality”VHS-format videotape or DVD with the required repertoire* sung from memory with piano accompaniment. There should be a close-up of the singer’s face for the first song, and a full-body (head to toe) camera angle for the second song. Attire should be concert or audition clothing.
  • Include an excerpt of another musician giving the auditionee a never-before-rehearsed 4-bar sight-reading excerpt. Along with the tape, please include a copy of the music used for sight-reading.

Master of Fine Arts in Voice

The Master of Fine Arts is a degree for students of superior ability in performance, requiring a minimum of 60 post-baccalaureate semester hours in which the thesis is minimally two full-length solo recitals. A Master of Arts degree may be earned while the student is working toward the Master of Fine Arts degree, but the student must meet all requirements for each degree separately, including two final examinations and three thesis recitals with a minimum combined total of 60 semester hours of graduate credit. Acceptance into the program requires the following:

  1. A US bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Graduate Admissions, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00, or foreign equivalent.
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. Curriculum vita sent to the School of Music
  4. Audition and Interview
    The audition for the Master’s of Fine Arts Degree program includes:

Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice

The DMA degree in performance and pedagogy requires a minimum of 72 post-baccalaureate semester hours. Candidates must meet all the general requirements for the DMA in music with respect to residence, written and oral comprehensive examinations. It is expected the DMA applicant in the solo voice area will have overcome major technical vocal problems and be able to offer quality public performances, successfully manage professional engagements, and utilize a variety of appropriate teaching skills. A minimum of 24 semester hours must be earned at the University of Iowa. Acceptance into the program requires the following:

A. A US bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00, or foreign equivalent .

B. Three letters of recommendation

C. A curriculum vita sent to the School of Music

D. Audition and Interview

1. The DMA audition includes:

a. a recital of memorized solo song literature from the standard concert repertoire, representative of the various styles and periods, and demonstrating the singer's command of diction in French, German, Italian and English. The recital should be no more than an hour in length, with the understanding that the auditioners may terminate, interrupt, or change the order as they deem necessary. One opera aria and one oratorio aria may be included on the recital program.

b. a demonstration of sight-singing proficiency.

c. Under extenuating circumstances, a high quality audio or videocassette tape recording may be submitted in lieu of a live audition with approval of the Voice Faculty. Taped auditions must satisfy the repertoire requirements previously cited. Please see “Recorded Audition Requirements” for technical detail.

2. The audition should be completed no later than the application deadline prior to each session set by the Graduate College and Registrar. Those wishing to be considered for a Teaching Assistantship should audition no later than March 1, 2008. Priority for selection of TAs will be given to applicants auditioning in person.

3. A final MA or MFA thesis recital by a graduate student already enrolled in the University of Iowa may be accepted as a DMA audition with the pre-approval of the voice faculty.

4. The DMA audition committee is comprised of all members of the UI voice faculty present at the audition. A majority vote by the committee constitutes its decision. If disapproved, the audition may be repeated once at the discretion of the voice faculty.

E. Research Paper

The student is required to submit to the voice faculty a qualifying research paper that can be considered representative of the level of writing competence appropriate to his/her candidacy for the DMA degree. This paper must demonstrate the student's ability to (1) write clear, concise English; (2) organize ideas into a coherent and extended discourse; and (3) express thoughts, which are manifestly his/her own.

Doctor of Philosophy in Music Literature

With emphasis in Vocal Pedagogy or Vocal Literature

This degree is available to those students who have already achieved a professional level of performance excellence and are seeking intensive studies in vocal pedagogy or voice literature. The degree requires a minimum of 72 post-baccalaureate semester hours. Candidates must meet all the general requirements for the Ph.D. in music with respect to residence, language, and written and oral comprehensive examinations.

A. Admission requirements

  1. A US bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00, or foreign equivalent.
  2. For the Voacl Pedagogy emphasis, significant undergraduate coursework in the mathematical, physical, biological or engineering sciences must be in evidence.
  3. Three letters of recommendation

    • The Ph.D. audition includes:
      • a recital of memorized solo song literature from the standard concert repertoire, representative of the various styles and periods, and demonstrating the singer's command of diction in French, German, Italian and English. This paper must demonstrate the student's ability to (1) write clear, concise English; (2) organize ideas into a coherent and extended discourse; and (3) express thoughts which are manifestly his/her own. The following may fulfill the research paper requirement:
    • A master’s thesis (excluding performance thesis). Note, however, that acceptance as a master’s thesis does not necessarily insure acceptance as a qualifying research paper.
    • A term paper of considerable scope written either for a class or especially for this requirement.
