Committees Both the recital and final examination committees are selected by the student and the major teacher. The recital committee shall consist of 3 faculty members including the student's major professor and preferably one other woodwind professor. The final examination committee shall also consist of 3 faculty members including the student's major professor and at least one faculty member from that area. Master of Fine ArtsClick for MFA Degree Course Checklist for the Woodwind Area The M.F.A. is for students of superior ability in instrumental or vocal performance. It requires a minimum of 60 s.h. of postbaccalaureate study, including two full-length recitals or programs. The M.F.A. requires a Thesis (25:401) consisting of a research paper of moderate length; the M.F.A. Thesis may relate to some or all of the repertoire included on the recitals. Students may earn a Master of Arts degree while working toward the Master of Fine Arts degree, but must take two separate final examinations. A. Although an audition on campus is recommended, a recording, representative of current performing abilities, may be submitted. The D.M.A. degree in performance and pedagogy requires a minimum of 72 post-baccalaureate semester hours. Full-time residency is required for two semesters (minimum of 9 s.h. coursework), or if the student holds a Teaching Assistantship of 25%-time or more, the residency requirement may be fulfilled with three semesters of 6 s.h. course work. Students pursuing a performance M.A. degree at the University of Iowa may use the Master's recital as the D.M.A. audition, provided the audition committee is notified of this intent prior to the recital. B. Specific Performance Requirements
C. Language Requirement or Secondary Area of Music The D.M.A. student has a choice of satisfying a proficiency requirement in French or German (other languages must be approved by the woodwind area) OR completing coursework in a Secondary Area of music. See details for these requirements on the D.M.A. checklist. D. Committees The recital, comprehensive examination, and thesis/essay committees, are selected by the student and the major advisor. The recital committee shall consist of no fewer than four members from the woodwind faculty or woodwind and other areas. The comprehensive examination committee shall consist of five members from the School of Music and include the student's major professor. The thesis/essay committee shall consist of four members from the School of Music plus one non-music faculty member. E. D.M.A. Thesis or Essay (4-8 s.h.) D.M.A. candidates must give evidence of their ability to make a scholarly investigation of limited scope by means of a written thesis or essay. The thesis/essay supervisor and topic are to be selected by the student and his/her advisor. A Prospectus describing the project must by approved by the thesis committee. The "final" version of the thesis or essay must be in the hands of the committee members no later than 30 days prior to the scheduled oral defense.
