Graduate Advisory Examinations
Before registering, entering graduate students in music (or returning
students who have not previously completed the exams) are required to
take the Graduate Advisory Examinations in Music Theory and in Music
History and Literature. Graduate students who have not passed the Graduate
Advisory Examination in Music Theory must pass 025:240 Analytical Techniques
before registering for graduate music theory electives. Those who have
not passed the Advisory Examination in Music History must pass 025:301
Advanced History and Literature of Music I and/or 025:302 Advanced History
and Literature of Music II before registering for graduate music history
electives. Music history electives are listed under "Graduate Programs: Master of Arts" in The University of Iowa General Catalog.
Incoming graduate students who do not complete the advisory examination upon entering the School of Music will forfeit the option to test out of25:301 Advanced History and Literature of Music I and 25:302 Advanced History and Literature of Music II These courses (or exemption from them) are pre-requisites for all graduate electives in music history. Students will not be allowed to register for music history electives unless both courses are successfully completed or waived by examination.
Each Advisory Examination lasts two hours. The student should take
both the Music Theory and the Music History Examinations during the
day or days immediately preceding the start of classes in his or her
initial semester of study. The exams are typically offered at the following
times:
- Fall Semester: the Friday and Saturday prior to the first day of
classes.
- Spring Semester and Summer Session by appointment. Contact the
Academic Office at (319) 335-1604 to schedule an exam time.
The examinations are normally given in Room 1027 of Voxman Music Building:
Note: Call the Academic Office at (319) 335-1604 or 1-800-553-Iowa
if you will not be able to take the Advisory exams during the scheduled
time. If you do not call prior to the scheduled exam time, we will not
be able to make any alternative arrangements for the exam.
No student is prevented from enrolling because of an unsatisfactory
score on either examination. The examinations allow entering graduate
students with excellent preparation in music theory or music history
to take graduate elective courses in those areas without having to pass
the prerequisite courses 025:240, 025:301 and/or 025:302.
Exam results will be posted on the graduate bulletin board across
from the Main Office by the first day of classes, and faculty advisors
will be notified of the results.

The Graduate Advisory Examination in Music Theory covers:
- Part I Fundamentals: Intervals, chords, rhythm, scales, meter, instrumental transpositions
- Part II Harmony, Form, Tonal Analysis

Students who score above 70% on the Graduate Advisory Examination in Music Theory may substitute a 3 s.h. "required elective" theory course for 025:240 Analytical Techniques. All other students must take 025:240 Analytical Techniques, offered each spring semester, before attempting elective courses in music theory.
