Entrance Auditions

Graduate

Graduate applicants are responsible for contacting the appropriate faculty member to schedule an audition.

An on-campus audition is preferred. The audition should consist of a variety of materials to demonstrate the performer's ability and musicianship. If a personal audition is not feasible, a recording representative of current abilities may be submitted with the approval of the area faculty.

A recorded audition should be at least 30 minutes in length and should include solos with accompaniment and other musical material (etudes, orchestral excerpts, etc.) which demonstrate the applicant's ability and musicianship. Senior recital recordings may be accepted if the recital was recently presented.

A senior recital by an undergraduate student already enrolled at the University of Iowa may serve as the M.A. audition provided the major professor is notified of this intent prior to the recital.

Specific area audition requirements can be found at the links below.

Undergraduate

Upon receipt of the admission application, undergraduate applicants will receive the name of the person to contact to arrange an audition. You will receive notification of your admission status four to six weeks after your audition. Specific area audition requirements can be found at the links below.

Audition Days

The University of Iowa School of Music invites high school seniors to participate in our 2008 Audition Day to be held Friday, February 15, 2008. Participants in these events will audition for admission to the School of Music and thousands of dollars in scholarships will be awarded for the 2008-2009 school year.

There will be additional audition days to accomodate vocal students: Saturday, October 20, 2007, and Saturday, February 16, 23, and March 1, 2008.

School of Music scholarships are awarded strictly on the basis of merit and on the recommendation of the faculty. The awards range from the amount of applied music fees up to full in-state tuition and come in the form of a credit against the student's account at the University Business Office. These scholarships are renewable for a maximum of four years if academic and performance criteria are met each year. Registration as a music major in the recommended area of specialty is required.

The University of Iowa has long been recognized as among the best music academies in the nation. What makes the School of Music special is a course of study that is personally tailored to ensure that the serious music student reaches optimum potential. Internationally acclaimed master artists/teachers and conductors, state-of-the-art facilities, and one of the best cultural climates in the Midwest are among the attributes that make the School a leader. Our alumni hold some of the most prestigious musical posts in the world.

Planned activities for the day include a morning reception for students and parents with an opportunity to visit with School administrators, faculty, staff and students, auditions, building tours and faculty and student recitals.
