Graduate Students

Students may work toward a Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, or Doctor of Musical Arts. The school also offers a theory pedagogy minor and a certificate in sacred music.
Before applicants can be considered for admission to any of the graduate programs, they must submit supporting materials in their indicated area of concentration. Information about specific admission to the Graduate College and curriculum requirements for each area in the School of Music is available from the school's academic office.

Graduate Student Handbook

The Graduate Student Handbook presents information on the policies and procedures relating to graduate degree programs of the School of Music at The University of Iowa. This handbook, together with the official current General Catalog of the University and the Manual of Rules and Regulations of the Graduate College, should provide clear guidelines concerning all aspects of graduate study.

Admissions

Applicants for graduate study should submit the following documents

  • University of Iowa Application
  • Application Fee
  • Transcripts
  • Test Scores (GRE, TOEFL, etc.) GRE scores will no longer be required for students seeking admission for Fall 2007 and beyond.
  • Financial Data (if required)
  • Letters of Recommendation* (three)
  • Supporting Material* (tapes, written work, listing of works performed, teachers)
    *Send directly to the School of Music Academic Office.

Applicants are responsible for contacting the appropriate faculty to arrange an audition. Applicants will be notified of their admission status within six weeks after the audition. Assistantship awards are made in writing in May.

Acceptance to performance degree programs are dependent upon completion of an audition, acceptance by the major professor, and the approval of the Associate Director of Graduate Studies. Completing the application by February 1 will enhance the possibility of being admitted the following fall semester. Later applications will be considered if openings remain.

Diagnostic Exams/Orientations

New graduate students are required to take placement exams in music history and theory prior to registration. Exams are held two days before classes begin each semester. Additional information concerning exams and orientations will be sent to incoming students six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.

Assistantships and Fellowships

Graduate students are considered for departmental assistantships and fellowships at the time of their audition. Most assistantships grant in-state tuition rates to non-residents and are renewable for two years for master's students and three years for doctoral students. Prospective students should submit completed graduate school applications by January 1 for fellowship consideration and March 1 for assistantship consideration.
