Welcome to the course, Recital Attendance, offered through the School of Music. The course does not meet in a regular classroom setting. If at any time you have questions or concerns about Recital Attendance, please visit the course page at ICON. It is your responsibility to read and follow the syllabus. All the information you need will be posted on ICON.

Course Objective

The objective of the course Recital Attendance is to provide a forum for musicians and introduce listeners to a diverse array of musical performance, media and literature that might otherwise not be experienced.

Course Requirements

 1. Be on time for recitals, or you will not receive attendance credit. At the beginning of each recital, cards are passed out on which the student prints name, identification number, recital name and recital number (which appears on the program). Please ask the ushers for a card before the performance begins. If you are late for a performance, you will not receive a card for credit. Sign the recital attendance card. At the end of the performance, return your card to the person from whom you received it (usually an usher or a faculty member). The School of Music does not accept cardsfrom individual students at the Music Office. If cards are not available, the above information should be put directly on the recital program. The program must be returned to room 1006 within ONE WORKINGDAY of the recital. No programs are accepted after one working day.

 2. On or about the first of each month, the School of Music publishes an online Calendar of Events. Only programs listed on this calendar will count toward Recital Attendance credit. The calendar can be found on the UI School of Music website (http://www.uiowa.edu/~music or can be accessed through ICON.

3. It is highly recommended that you distribute your recitals throughout the semester. It is required that you keep a copy of each program you have attended in case a discrepancy in attendance records arises. If a discrepancy in attendance records does arise, your recital program is the only proof that we will accept for class credit. Programs should be kept until after your class grade at the end of the semester has been posted. The School of Music accepts no responsibility for events that are cancelled. Recital changes are posted on a calendar regularly on the calendar and ICON, so you DO NOT need to come to the office to check the updates.

4. Recital Etiquette - attendance at any formal concert presentation demands concentration from both the recital presenter or presenters and the audience. Cell phones, iPods and pagers should be turned off during the performance. Food and beverages are not allowed in the recital halls. Maximum benefit for the listeners and the performers at formal recitals and concerts requires concentration and attention on the part of everyone. It is not appropriate to read or study other material during performances. Concert etiquette also dictates that applause is offered only at the end of complete works. Clues to the formal structure of a piece can be learned from the program. A multi-movement work is normally so indicated. For example:

Sonata for Clarinet
Allegro Moderato
Adagio
Presto

Applause should be offered only at the end of the last movement of such a work, in this example, at the end of the Presto.

Recital monitors have the right to refuse your credit for recital attendance if they observe inappropriate recital etiquette such as studying during performances, inappropriate talking and inattention, cell phone or iPod use, etc.

5. Attendance records are maintained by the School of Music office. Credit will be given for recitals attended from the first day of classes at the beginning of each semester and continue through the last day of classes. Credit will not be given for recitals scheduled during finals week. Students will receive a failing midterm report if you have not attended half of the required recitals by midterm.

6. The School of Music DOES NOT give out the number of recitals attended over the phone. If you have a question about the number of recitals we have on file for you, you can obtain this information through ICON.

7. Participants in recitals and students who are paid as personnel will not receive recital attendance credit for those recitals.

8. Some recitals and concerts have an admission charge. These will be noted in ICON or the online Calendar of Events.

Credit and Grading Policy
Grading Scale (no plus or minus grades will be used):

025:064 Non Major
9 Recitals S
Below 9 F

025:074 Major
15 Recitals A
13-14 Recitals B
11-12 Recitals C
9-10 Recital D
Below 9 F

Students will receive a failing midterm report if you have not attended half of the required recitals by midterm.

Course credit will be given only for authorized School of Music recitals and concerts. Normally, this will include all on-campus student recitals (including conducting recitals with Chamber Orchestra, Chorus or Band) and faculty recitals, and may include non-degree recitals if the faculty "sponsor" so indicates. In addition, certain events at Hancher Auditorium may count toward credit. These events will be listed on the monthly Calendar of Events, available in ICON or the School of Music website (www.uiowa.edu/~music).

Only these recitals listed on the calendar will count as recital attendance credit.

The School of Music offers over 350 events yearly. I welcome you to this course, hoping you will enjoy and benefit from the wide variety of music available at The University of Iowa.
