have a Bachelor degree in music. How do I become certified to
teach?
Students who do not wish
to pursue a graduate degree may seek "special student"
(non degree) status. They must apply to the College of Education's Office of Teacher
Education and Student Services. Students who already have
graduate standing must apply to the UI Graduate College for
"certification only" and must apply separately for
admission to the teacher education program. Deadlines for application
to the Graduate School are May 15, September 15, or February
15 for admission to restricted course work in the following
semester. Graduate and postbaccalaureate students may submit
GRE scores instead of PRAXIS I scores.

Students seeking an MA must obtain graduate
standing through the UI Graduate College and must apply separately

What
are the requirements for the MA and PhD in Music Education?
The MA
(non-thesis) is a 33-hour degree. The PhD
is a 72-hour degree (30 hours of courses beyond the MA, plus
12 hours of dissertation.) See

What
are the procedures for comprehensive exams?
MA students can expect 12 hours of written exams
spread over 3 days, based on their coursework. Students must
solicit 3 School of Music facuulty to serve on the exam committee.
Dr. Coffman chairs all MA music education comprehensive exams.
The student must be enrolled in the Graduate College during
the session in which the degree is to be conferred. In the final
semester, master's students register for Master's
Final Registration 000:001 or appropriate coursework.
PhD students can expect 20 hours of written
exams spread over 5 days, based on their coursework. Students
must solicit 5 School of Music facuulty to serve on the exam
committee. Dr. Coffman chairs all PhD music education comprehensive
exams. Please consult the PhD Handbook on this website for more information.
Students need to obtain and submit a Request
for Exam form and a Plan of Study form according
to the schedule posted by the Academic Office in the School
of Music.
What is involved in completing a dissertation?
After successfully completing your courses and
written comprehensive you must maintain continuous registration
by enrolling in either dissertation hours (25:500) or 2 s.h.
per semester of continuous registration 000:002
Doctoral Conintuous Registration. You have 5 years after
passing the written comprehensive exam to complete and defend
your dissertation.The student must be enrolled in the Graduate College during
the session in which the degree is to be conferred. In the final
semester, doctoral students register for Doctoral
Final Registration 000:003.
