What is NABJ?

Founded in 1975, NABJ is the oldest and largest of the four minority racial and ethnic professional journalism organizations in the nation. The others are the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian American Journalist Association and the Native American Journalists Association.

With more than 3,000 members nationally, representing the news media, public relations, journalism education and other related fields, NABJ's goals included improving news coverage by the mainstream of African Americans who make up 12 to 15 percent of the country's population and promoting diversity with in the news media. Blacks today comprise approximately 6 percent of journalists, an increase less than 1 percent in the late 1960's.

The NABJ membership includes print and broadcast journalists, educators and students.
