Here are some of our favorite "magic" lantern slides from the 1911 Laysan Island expedition. The images are hand-colored, prepared for University classes and the popular public lectures that were often presented at the conclusion of the Museum's expeditions.

The Museum sponsored dozens of expeditions all over the world at the turn of the last century. Frequently a camera was taken along to document the events. This year student-staff and volunteers have spent hundreds of hours cleaning, sorting and catologing the images with the help of funding for supplies provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Look for more of the photos to go up on our web site soon.
