20. Gloves

Meskwaki artists were exceptionally skilled at taking forms from other tribes and giving them a distinctly Meskwaki stamp. These gloves are likely another example of the skill of a Meskwaki artist in adapting the forms of other groups, Europeans in this case. The Museum's gloves are unusual in combining traditional quillwork (on the back of the hand) with trade beads. Comparing the effects of the different materials may give the modern viewer some appreciation of the great attraction of native artists for European beads.
