20b. Gloves - quillwork detail Surviving items of ceremonial clothing with quill work are rare because they are subject to the wear and tear of use and were often buried with the owners. A rich tradition of quill work existed before European contact but production declined steadily in the last half of the 18th century. It disappeared after 1850. Colors available from natural dyes were limited to shades of red, yellow, black and white. Surviving examples are usually containers or bags which were carefully stored away between uses and protected by successive generations.
