13. Pipe Bag or "Mah-ka-ne-mu'-teh" Pipe bags were used to carry a pipe and tobacco used on ceremonial occasions. They are not a traditional Meskwaki form, but appeared on a limited basis late in the 1800's. Meskwaki artists were exceptionally skilled at taking forms from other tribes and giving them a distinctly Meskwaki stamp. The design represents a fortress-like structure topped by two American flags. A human figure looms overhead with arms outstretched (see detail).
