19. Roach Meskwaki men traditionally shaved their heads except for a narrow strip down the center of their heads which was cut short except for a patch on top, the scalp lock, which was allowed to grow long and braided. The scalp lock was used to tie down the roach. Roaches were made of red dyed hair and black porcupine hair or turkey beard. According to some authorities the imposing crest is intended to represent the Piliated Woodpecker which was traditionally associated with war among northern woodland tribes.
